My almost 5yr old son may have a virus, I'd like to know if it is or what it's called! He's fine all day, playing, eating, drinking. Then bedtime comes, soon as he fall's asleep he wakes up to vomit.his doctor asked if he had asthma, but never looked into it.acid reflux was my next guess, but doctor said no.it's not all the time but he's vomited quite a few times after going to sleep.I do know there is some kind of virus going around.my almost 4yr old son also has same symptoms along with my 7year old daughter.all home from school (boys for a week now, daughter started yesterday).my almost 4year old vomit this morning and is totally fine with no fever, yesterday my daughter got sick but no fever.one has kinda loose stools other is kinda constipated.what is this and how can I help them other than a BRATS diet? Antibiotics? Anything?:/

What can I do next?

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of gastro-intestinal virus' that could be causing this. Testing is the ONLY way to diagnose.

So, since it's likely to pass in a matter of days to even a week or more, the only thing to do is treat the symptom.

Unless you want expensive, unnecessary tests which will tell you "your son has ABC Virus, give him bland food and water the next few days and it will pass".

As opposed to your current answer "your son as a virus, give him bland food and water the next few days and it will pass."

If it were only your 4 yr old son having these symptoms, I would suggest either acid reflux or post nasal drip. Both of those can cause kids to vomit after they've been laying down for awhile. However, since your other children also have the same symptoms, it is most definitely a stomach virus. There are different strains. It has to run it's course. It can last for up to a week. My daughter had a bad one when she was 4 that lasted for a week. First it was 24 hours of non stop vomiting, then it was lethargy and just vomiting 2-3 times a day for a week. Push lots of fluids and the brat diet. Try to have them rest during the day. Sleep is great for building the immune system. Also give probiotic supplements.

If you want a doctor's opinion, please take them to your actual doctor and ask him/her to pursue the answer instead of looking for a doctor's advice on a parenting forum.

It sounds like your doctor has already told you it's probably a virus. The fact that your other children have similar symptoms confirms that. You don't need to know the name of the virus. There is no medication that will treat a virus. Antibiotics do not get rid of a virus. And, taking them when you have a virus only helps your body built up a resistance to them so that they don't help when you have a bacterial infection. You treat the symptoms with a BRAT diet as your doctor suggested. Trust your doctor.

You can keep your children as comfortable as possible. Only give them soft, easy to digest foods such as those listed on a BRAT diet. Don't give them anything to eat before going to bed. Be sure they keep hydrated by giving them plenty of fluids. Sipping on "dead" Seven Up sort of soda may help. Popcycles help some children. It might help to have them sleep sitting more upright.

Know that this will pass in a week or so.

I am not a doctor, and you need to follow up with yours on this.

Hopefully it's just a virus kicking his butt when he's tired.

Your post, though, reminds me of an episode of mystery diagnosis where a child consistently threw up after going to sleep. It was a strange, mild form of epilepsy. If it keeps on going and just happens at a particular time, I would push for further tests.

My son had this (lovely) virus right after the holidays. It took a FULL week to recover and because it was viral we couldn't do much for him.

- BRAT
- Mac and Cheese (easy going in and out)
- LOTS of water and Pedialyte
- Wash their sheets and towels in HOT water as often as you can.
- Lukewarm baths
- Tons of hand washing
- Clorox all of your surfaces so that the virus doesn't hang around your house too long

I agree with Missy. It's time to go in to the doctor again. I'm pretty sure there aren't any mom or dad physicians on this board. Even if there were, you should still get in-person advice after your children have been seen in person.

Sorry, from what I know there aren't any doctors on this site. Quite a few nurses among other medical professions, but not docs.

Thing is, it would be highly unethical for a doctor, nurse, etc., to venture a diagnosis online. You can't diagnose without examining, and without a set of vitals, medical history, etc. All someone on this site could say is "I'm a nurse, I think you should take her back to the doctor."

I agree with SweetChaos. Allergies are SO BAD this season. My daughter has post nasal drip and it causes her to cough in the first hour after she goes to sleep and on rare occasions, to gag up a bunch of stuff. You might consider seeing an allergist. He might suggest some children's Zyrtec or Allegra to dry them up.

What I have found w this stomach virus this year (most likely the norovirus) is that is it impacting everyone differently. There is a new strain this year, so even those that do not usually get it, are getting it. I have never even had the stomach flu and I am 37 and I even got it! My daughter had it for 1.5 weeks. Terrible diarrhea, but also had an ear infection and was on an antibiotic. My son had it, when he woke up on the middle of the night puking and then was find within 24 hours. A few days later he came home from school with a fever and complained of his stomach for a few days after and even a headache. My mom had it for about four days and I had it for 24 hours with a fever and was just very achy and nauseas. SO, sometime when kids lie down flat, they can get a little dizzy of perhaps sleep him propped up a little with two pillows if this is still happening.
