My 8 1/2 yr old daughter has always had a pretty sensitive belly, like if she eats a little too much (for her not too much for the typical kid) junk, she'll end up throwing up in the middle of the night. Well lately its been more and more frequent and she isn't overeating that i can tell.. No other noticeable symptoms, just lots of belly aches... What could this be? Yes, i'm gonna take her to the Doc....but in the meantime i'd like to hear if other moms have been through this and what it turned out to be??
Thank You!

***The only other symptom would be that she complains of a headache pretty often too. Don't think its any kind of constipation, because she goes very regularly....probably 2 times a day and its a large amount typically.
Thanks everyone

So What Happened?

Well the Doctor does think its a GERD / reflux thing and has put her on Zantac (1 tsp, two times a day) and wants to see her back in 2 weeks. She wants her to avoid acidic foods...she mentioned tomato based things, chocolate, mustard, ranch, and pops... Anything else I should keep her away from? I don't have much experience with this. Thanks everyone :) Merry Christmas

Is there NO other symptoms?

Aside from an infection, or constipation, the other possibility is low adrenal hormones.
Cortisol or aldsoterone. They control stomach acid, glucose metabolism and more. When someone gets low on these hormones, they will vomit, they will have nausea all day- or comes and goes, they will have insomnia issues, concentration issues, headaches. As it progresses: fatigue, leg pains, pains in hips, knees, low back. (which is typically blamed on growing pains because most doctors have ZERO training in hormones in med school). Hormone issues are now at an all time high because of all the chemicals in the environment, but also alot of the prescriptions and antibiotic drugs disrupt/affect the endocrine system.
Celiacs is caused by low stomach acid issues (low hormones.)

Dont rule out constipation. Try giving more water and also, a product called CALM. It is a magnesium product that will keep the stool soft and help them go more.

It could be so many things from very simple (what I wish I knew years ago) to complex. It could be hiatal hernia, a growth pushing on her espohagus, stomach ulcer.... so many things!

But.

Here is the simple thing -- what I wish I'd known back when my kids were very young. Antibiotics wipe out our natural biota in our intestines. That sets us up for food allergies/sensitivities, asthma symptoms, autoimmune probelms, "mental" problems... in other words inflammatory stuff. ( http://itsnotmental.blogspot.com/2011/03/gut-brain-and-ba... )

Probiotics and prebiotics and changing the diet might help in that case.

But I would definitely get everything checked out.

My 9 year old is similar. Eats to much and throws up. He also gets IBS symptoms where he is stuck in the bathroom after eating certain things. I never really thought about bringing him to the doc for it. Use your mommy gut though, if it does not feel within the spectrum of "normal" bring her in.

She's having trouble digesting certain things - hard to know what it is. You can start eliminating everything and make yourself miserable, or you can effectively supplement to give her the missing nutrients to allow her to tolerate normal food. I'd choose the 2nd option. I do this with a lot of kids in my work and would be happy to give you a healthy, safe solution.

This sounds like a dietary sensitivity / intolerance. These are about halfway between an allergy and "normal." Kids don't go into anaphylatic (sp?) over them, but they do have stomach pains, vomiting and the like. Common triggers (in order of commonness) are:

Wheat
Dairy (not just lactose, all dairy)
Nuts
Eggs
Soy
Food dyes and other additives

As Diane said, try taking ALL these things out of her diet for two weeks (your local health store will be your friend) and then adding them back, one by one. This can be a hard transition, but a she'll feel great, and have a lifelong healthy diet, in the end.

I wonder if she is allergic or intolerant to something. My 6 year old complains of belly aches. I have him on Absorb Aid powder. It's a digestive aid my doctor recommends. It has helped. Another thing you might look into is probiotics. It is healthy bacteria for her tummy.

Has the doctor tested her for allergies? Just a thought. I would try a digestive enzyme for kids and/or the probiotics first for a while and see if they help your daughter. Best of luck.

She has acid reflex! Or could be sugar with the headaches.

Before we went gluten free my younger son would throw up every so often . . . he also threw up with strep (weird I know).

I like Jeanie's post too.

Hope you can figure this out Detective Mom! :)
