How Do I Cook for 20 Friends Before So I Can Enjoy Visiting?

I am wondering how you all cook for so many at the same time. I am thinking of hosting a 2 hour come and go for a bunch of our new neighbors to meet everyone. Do you cook it all the day before or in the morning of? Do you leave things in the oven, in the crockpot, or whatever? I want to try to cook a big meal and serve it buffet style. How Long Could You Make It, Food-wise, If the Grocery Stores Were Closed?

Last week I was with my mom in a big chain grocery store. For some reason all the computers went down, and we had to wait about 10 minutes to actually check out with our items (and there was no guarantee they would come back). It got me to thinking - how prepared are we, as a family, if for some reason grocery stores were not open?
