Zumba Classes - Minneapolis,MN

I am thinking of signing up for Zumba through community ed. It's not cheap, and you have to sign up for 2x week for 8 weeks. Tell me about your experience with Zumba classes... Do you love/hate it? Is it hard to learn the moves? What kind of clothes should I wear?

I used to go to Turbo Kick through the Y and loved it, but I am no longer a member (and after my last baby I am 15+ lbs heavier then I was then.) I can't afford a monthly gym membership (but dont qualify for membership assistance or anything), but I think I can come up with this one time fee for 8 weeks to kickstart some weightloss and getting in shape.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

if you have a wii or an xbox 360 with kinect you can get a zumba video game.
I have the first one for the 360 it's a lot of fun and is a really good work out.
Hope this helps :)

Every Zumba class is different so I suggest you take a trial class and see if it's for you. I have taken classes with 3 different instructors and only liked one.

Ive been looking into this myself and found that it is much cheaper to get a gym membership and take their zumba classes. Plus then you have all of the other classes as well. The zumba by us is only $5 a class but still if you do 3-4 days a week that adds up to 70-80 bucks a month! Even the "expensive" gym by us is $49 a month and it is really really nice, plus childcare is included. A lot of chain gyms like LA Fitness/24 hour etc are around 35 a month.

Zumba is a lot of fun. I love it. I go about twice a week. Sometimes the steps are a little complicated, but it really doesn't matter. Just keep moving. :-) Good luck!

Zumba is soooo much fun! You don't have to be an expert dancer to pick up the moves. And, no one watches you because they are too busy watching themselves. lol I don't think of it as exercising because it's just plain fun. I know I'm burning calories though because my heart rate increases and I sweat. A lot. I have taken at different places and find I get more enjoyment out of certain instructors than others. Some classes are more intense than others too. Just dress comfortably like you would for any other exercise class. Zumba has its own line of dance wear and some places push the products, but it certainly isn't required to Zumba. Have fun! IMO, it's definitely worth the money to at least try for 8 weeks.

I took Zumba at the Y and loved it. I am not the most cordinated person so, I struggled a bit with the steps but it is super fun. I left dripping in sweat. It is an awesome workout. I bought it for the Wii at home and can now make a fool out of myself in the privacy of my own home with just my family to entertain with my lack of dance skills. :)
I say go for it. You will love it.

I think Zumba is a lot of fun, and I wish I could go more often. Can I do the fancy steps? Indubitably NO! I just try not to look in the mirror and I keep on moving! If you keep moving, you are burning the calories, you're doing good cardio, and you're getting healthier. Take a water bottle. Wear your athletic shoes, good socks, and clothes that you can really move in. Some Zumba people like to wear crazy costumes, but you don't have to.

Don't worry about your being heavier. Nobody's going to think about how you look; they're too busy thinking about how they look. Don't put off living until things magically change. Do something now. Once you're done with the eight weeks, you may find another program you can be in, or another way of working out. Go for it!

It is so much fun,
later you wont even be thinking of how you look while dancing, and will be like: I got this, and so full of energy later.

Yes, If you can swing it- give it a try- you will have fun.
I used to teach Zumba at my studio with great results.
Don't worry too much about the clothing-
you can pick something up at TJ Maxx etc...

IF you can move, you can do it.. There are usually ALL types of people in the class ranging from the coordinated to the not so coordinated, but nonetheless people are having fun.

before you buy all 8 weeks, see if it's for you.. can you attend the first one for free? When I used to go, I went via the YMCA , which was a cheaper way to attend not only Zumba but Yoga and other classes they offered.

Also, IF you do decide to go with it... I would get a sneaker or shoe insert that has good support in the ball of the foot.. Many of the Zumba moves will have you pressing your foot into the ground...

I stopped going to Zumba for two reasons, one I discontinued my YMCA membership and two, the balls of my feet became incredibly sore, so much so that I have what they call neuromas (inflamed nerves) in the ball of each foot..

Don't let that scare.. I also did aerobics for years prior.. However, IF you decide to stay with it.. get good shoes. you ll be glad you did..

good luck

Love love love Zumba! It was easy to learn the moves, although some teachers do more repetition, others have more complicated dance moves. Doesn't matter, as long as you keep moving your are getting exercise. I wear a tank top with built in bra and short shorts because I get so hot and sweaty in class. Most of the other women wear long zumba or yoga style pants.

I go to class once or twice a week to learn the steps, and do zumba at home using a CD or youtube videos between visits to the gym.

If you start at the beggining of the class session than you should be good because you'll learn the moves and routines. I tried one class (at my gym) that I lasted for about 10 min before I walked out because it was too fast and the other people must have been regulars. I did another that was more for beginners (slower paced) and easier to pick up the moves but still others must have been regulars. By the way most gym memberships are pretty cheap now and have no long term contracts.
