Yay!!! Got My First Kindle!! Need a Book!

I am in love (and so behind the times.) My Uncle gave me a kindle for Christmas...just your standard variety, no Fire...and a gift card, so I can get some books.

I've already found and downloaded free classics (Pride and Prejudice, War and Peace...you know, light reading...hah hah!) but I've been hesitant to BUY books because I want to find some really great ones. I did buy the best dark fantasy and horror of 2012.

So, my favorite author is Stephen King, but I own just about everything he has (on paper). I also like Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston, Sophie Kinsella, and classics...so, my taste ranges from horror, science horror, archeological thriller, to books that honestly make me laugh out loud until my sides hurt. That's really all I like...stories that make me go "Wow" as the story progresses and keep me on the edge of my seat, OR stories that are extremely amusing. I don't care for romance, inspirational books, etc, etc (and the whole 50 Shades thing just makes me roll my eyes in pity for the author...no offense to those who enjoyed it, but I prefer well written work).

So, I have NO idea what to buy...I haven't actually bought a book in years and usually just reread what I already have. Could you please give me some suggestions? I would be SO grateful, because I'm just so giddy about this!!

(Also, any games you enjoy that are available on the Kindle would be appreciated, as well.)

What can I do next?

When I am looking for a new book to read, I think about the movies that I like to watch. The book versions are ALWAYS better (with the exception of Forrest Gump), so it you can find a Kindle version of a movie you like, then it should be worth the money! Happy reading!

Congrats! I got my first Kindle yesterday, too.
I am reading The Passage by Justin Cronin which you might like if you like Stephen King. If you have not read it, it is the first book in a trilogy and it is definitely an on the edge of your seat book. It is kindof science horror/apocolyptic world kind of book. The second book in the trilogy is called The Twelve, I just downloaded that one on my kindle :). I have had a hard time putting the Passage down, lots of late reading nights and lots of creepy dreams afterward but man, it is good!

I have the Kindle app on my tablet and am currently reading Stephen King's 11/22/63, but sounds like you have probably already read that. You could go to the actual book store and browse then go home and download what you would have bought at the store. And we wonder why book stores may go out of business :)

I love that you can get samples sent to your kindle so you can try a book before you buy it. Also, your local library may offer kindle books to borrow. Mine does and it is great.

I suggest these is you haven't read them yet:

Daughter of Smoke and Bone
The Hunger Games Trilogy

Here is a link to the Daily Deals for kindle, some funny books for just a few bucks:

"Children of another god" was an amazing set, and as a bonus the first book of the set is free so you can read it before committing to buying the others. I also greatly enjoyed "the girl with the dragon tattoo" series. I hated 50 shades, I would skip it if I was you.

It's been great for me to find new books. I like to read a lot of series books...

Hunger Games are my favorite
Dragon Tattoo trilogy is close second
Currently I'm into the "young adult" fantasy theme...witches/fairies stuff...reading the Fallen Star Series currently.

As Galway Girl said, The Passage by Justin Cronin is very good. Also The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It is very dark, but very good. Did you read The Wind Through the Keyhole yet?

I check this guys site every day:

http://www.fkbooksandtips.com/

He features several free books per day that are rated 4 stars or higher on kindle and usually links the free app of the day as well. He also lets you know the "kindle deal of the day" which is the deeply discounted book for the day. I rarely pay for books, just download the free ones. That way if I get a stinker, I don't care if I don't finish it.

The other free link I use is this one:

http://www.ereaderiq.com/free/

I don't care for that one as much because even though there's a ton of books right in front of you -- you have to wade through a ton of junk (and I mean junk) to find anything worth reading.

You can also just go to the search bar in amazon and search for "Free Horror books" or "Free Mystery".

Have fun... I've read more books in the year I've had my kindle than I've ever read in my life!

Loved my Kindle so my hubby got me the Fire for Christmas ! Anyway - Amazon does their daily deal (you can sign up for the emails) and they also have 100 books free every day. Mainly authors I haven't heard of before but I have found some mainstream authors and have really enjoyed some of the new ones. There are a couple of websites that pick out some of the books and will send you an email each day to "showcase those". You download them through Amazon (they will link to the website). Pixle of Ink, Inspired Reads (religious / inspirational), Book Bub are the ones I use. Enjoy your Kindle. It's awesome !
