Worried About Nutrition of My 2 Year Old

Since my daughter(2) first started on solids, she has not liked fruit. No bananas, strawberries, pineapple, apples, grapes, watermelon, cantelope, pears, oranges, or even cherries. I have tried putting them on her plate for every meal or snack. I have tried to sneak them into foods that she does like. I have even dried fruit, maybe to get her to think that it was candy. She isn't as bad with vegetables. I can get her to drink apple and white grape juice. What am I doing wrong?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the advice. I feel much better. I took her to the doctor and found that her iron count was low. He said that she ate enough meat/protein for her iron to be up but without a multivitamin she wasn't getting enough vitamin C so that her body could absorb the protein. He also said to give her a multivitamin and she if that helps. I give her all the juice that she can have without it "running right through her". Thanks again.

Hello D.,

I have a 7 year old and a 3 year old and I have been giving them a nutritional product called limu moui ( I was even drinking it when I was pregnant with my 3 year old). It is a brown seaweed. My 3 year old will not drink her milk unless I put the limu moui in her bottle with the milk. It taste like apple juice. I had other moms to try it also for their little ones and it has really helped with their allergies, dry skin, and much more. It has over 70 nutrients, including immune-supporting antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals and Fucoidan. If you would like more information go to www.discoverlimu.com and if you would like to order some put in referral number ###-###-####. Good luck!!

She may not like the consistancy of the foods. Have you tried the new V8 juices? I have a hard time with my girls and veggies....my oldest gags and has actually vomited (she's a bit dramatic) and they will drink these juices like there is no tomorrow. They have all kids of blends which when you read the bottle, one cup is like one serving of fruits and veggies. Check them out....the kids love them! Also, make sure she is having a daily vitamen.

Have you talked to your doctor? That would be one suggestion. Personally, if she is eating vegatables I wouldn't really worry. Fruits have strong flavors especially in concentrated forms like juice. Additionally they have sugars in them so her choice to avoid this can be a blessing, many kids today get addicted to sugary foods early. Do talk to your doctor though, she may have some sort of allergy and naturally avoids these foods for a good reason.

It could be that she doesn't have a taste for sweet foods yet. At this age, their taste buds are very sensitive, switching from soft, bland foods, to foods with different textures and spices.
Give her time. Mix it up with her food, like her cereal or oatmeal, or just put some on the plate, and don't force her to eat it, it will all come in time. Good luck!

it is perfectly normal for toddlers to have certain types of foods that they just have no interest in... my daughter always loved fruits but I have a very hard time getting her to eat veggies other than corn. At this age the best thing you can do is keep up with the fruit juices and find a some multi-vitamins that she will enjoy. My little girl loves the gummy vitamins; they're easy to chew and more like candy.
Continue to offer her real fruits; let her see you eat them regularly and try to make eating them fun...she'll come around eventually! You're not doing anything wrong!

Hi D., everyone has some great thoughts here. I especially like the idea of smoothie, milkshakes for adding a little fruit to her diet. But here is where my mind went. Purchased juices are a high source of processed sugars. Fructose yes, but still sugar. If the concern is nutrition then a great vitamin is a better source than purchased juices. However, if she likes juices and will drink fruit juices as well as veggie, then consider investing in a quality juicer and make it fresh for her. You can learn to make many different combinations that will provide quality nutrition. apples and grapes make a great basic juice that you may be able to add to.
But even if she still doesn't want other fruits added, at least she will be getting fresh nutrition with her juice.
Anyway, those are my tidbits.

My mother in law tells me all the time that my husband never ate fruits. He still won't touch them. His mother eats them, but he never would. I wouldnt worry. All children are different.

I didn't see if anyone mentioned it, but does she like milkshakes or smoothies? You could do a yogurt/berry smoothie or put it in light ice cream with a blender.

Are you aware of a product called Mannabears? They are gummybears containing 12 freeze-dried fruits and veggies
which are vine-ripened (containing tons more nutrition). A bottle costs a little over $20 a month. How much would you spend on that much food? They are great treats that replace candy. They may be melted and put into juice or food if your daughter doesn't like 'gummy" textures. more info; www.mannapages.com/joanh.

Your not doin anything wrong. She is just picky rite now. My youngest is 4 & if I ask him what he wants he says the same thing everytime "SAUSAGE" We go out to eat and its "SAUSAGE" Then he has his moments where he wont eat a thing. Give her vitamins and before you know it she'll be eating you out of house & home w/fruit & vegies.

My 3yr old used to be like that. She wouldn't even try tasting the fruits, and would not drink milk. I kept offering her fruits until finally little by little she started tasting here and there and now loves to eat all kinds of fruits and drinks milk. To get her to eat a banana I would play games with her, telling her we were monkeys = ) So I'm guessing a lot of kids are like this, it's just a matter of time.

D.,

I agree with what the other moms have said. And if you give her juice, just make sure it is 100% juice - no high fructose corn syrup added.

Good luck,
S.

This is funny, usually parents complain that their kids won't eat their veggies!!!! Maybe she is a texture eater so maybe she doesn't like the way it feels when she chews it. Make sure she is getting a great multi vitamin and she should be fine.
