Which hospital...Magee or Shadyside?

My hubby's ortho surgeon can do his back surgery at either of those hospitals. We are scheduled for Magee, but my Mom called this morning and told me a friend had told her that Magee was filthy and the staff unprofessional. Does anyone have experiences (positive, negative, or neutral) at either of these hospitals?
Thanks in advance!

I had both of my children at Magee and my experiences were positive. My favorite thing about Magee is that the menu is room service that you can have delivered whenever you are hungry and you can choose the food that you want to eat.

I find it so funny how people either love Magee or hate it.

I spent my 39th week of pregnancy in the hospital with asthma complications and delivered my daughter by c-section - both at Magee. My experiences were largely positive with both.

I did think that it wasn't as clean as it could have been, but after going to Children's several times with my daughter and being in Jefferson and South Side for testing, this seems to be the norm at all hospitals these days.

Most of the staff that cared for me at Magee were phenomenal. There were a few I had issues with, but I feel that any time you are dealing with that many people there are bound to be a few bad apples.

My friend's dad had knee surgery at Magee and also had a really good experience.

Hi S., I have only been a patient at two hospitals in this area since moving here from Ohio, Forbes Regional and Shadyside. Both were positive experiences, great staff, very clean, well-organized, good food (if hospital food can be good! LOL) and their Er's were amazing when I needed them. Best wishes.

I have only been at Magee and that was to have my daughter, i will say that its not filthy and the staff i had worked great with me. I would definately go there again if I needed anything done or to have another child.

Because Magee is a Women gear hospital I would probably choose Shadyside for a non female procedure.
I have never been to either, only West Penn, Forbes, Childrens, Allegheny General and UPMC.

Most of the doctors I know say that they would personally go either to Magee or Shadyside. Magee is smaller and a bit easier to navigate, but I think that either would be fine. I had a great experience at Magee after I had my baby, but I've never been admitted to Shadyside, so I can't compare.

S.,
I have had 4 kids, an 2 outpatient treatments at Megee an they was wonderful every single time i was there. I have never went there an it was dirty. Megee is a very clean hospital. My Sil an best friend work there an was floored when i told them what you mentioned.I just almost lost my uncle at shadyside due to his own nurse not reading his chart an not giving him his clot meds an it turned bad. this wasn't the first time he has had problems there, but this is the only hospital his lung doctors deal with.I'd say take your chances with Megee an see first hand.

Wow thats a pretty large generalization for your moms friend to make. Magee is filled with numerous health professionals and to make that observation because of a couple bad ones in the bunch is pretty bad (for lack of a better word)

Any hospital, doctors office or profession in that matter can have people working in it that should be in another line of work , so I think your moms friend generalization is unfair.

Either hospital would be fine I'm sure, but if you're worried then switch.

I would not agree at all that Magee is filthy or the staff unprofessional. I had surgery there, and the staff was efficient, friendly, and professional. It wasn't at all dirty. I think both hospitals have good reputations, so I'm sure either will work for you. Good luck!

While i can not respond regarding every employee at Magee, i can respond to a few. My mother had to have some tests done recently at Magee in her breast. My mom was aksed to go in earlier than her scheduled appointment time (she was thrilled at that request, the sooner the better)Well when she got there she found out that only one of the two doctors she was to see that day wanted her in early (not discussed in the phone call)therefore she ended up being there longer than originally planned. And then while she was getting a needle aspiration the "doc" brought in another doc to "help" her and it took them 3 tries and a lot of poking around to get any results. The whole time neither of the doctors actually spoke to my mom, they just did there thing while she laid there like she didn't exist. The other members of the staff were very unpersonable and at one point down right rude. So while you can not make assumptions about a whole hospital from a few staff memebers it can be enough to make you second guess a decision. BTW my mother has such a bad expierience that she ended up calling the patient advocacy department. I would say take all of the input you get and weigh the good with the bad. And remember every employee is the face of that company and if there is one that has a bad attitude and gets away with it, you can guarantee there are more.

I've worked at both hospitals, and there is really no difference. Magee is, of course, stilted towards care for women, but the differences are only apparent to visitors in that regard. If I were to pick one, I would probably go with Magee, but only because of its smaller size.
