I'd like to know your thoughts/experience on giving birth at Rush Copley vs. Edward. Contemplating VBAC. Want progressive, family friendly, breastfreeding supportive facility.

Thanks

So What Happened?

Thanks to all who replied to my inquiry. After following up on referrals and touring the hospitals, we have decided to go to Rush Copley and Dr. Alexander.

Thanks again

I had my third baby at Rush, a scheduled c-section. I thought it was a great hospital. I've had my three children at three different hospitals. The food at Rush was excellent - love that you can order off the menu. Overall I had a very good experience there. I was also very impressed with their Level III NICU.

I had my baby at Rush Copley last year and the doctor and nurses were all wonderful. I have friends who have had babies at Edward, who also have had good experiences there. I don't think you can go wrong in either place. As long as you have a good OB who you like. Mine was Dr. Tara Anderson (office is connected to Rush Copley) of the Women's Healthcare Associates. I would highly recommend her. She's in an all-female practice (which was important to me). Good luck!

I had my son at Edwards and absolutly loved it, I don't care where we live, I will go out of my way to have our next child there, the food was excellent, and the nursing staff was the best, the didn't push me to breastfeed but were there to help me in anyway, I tried but son was born tounge-tied. I highly recommend Edwards!!! Good luck, it seems as if you are getting good information about both hospitals.

Hi S.,

I delivered my son at Edward Hospital in August 2005, and absolutely loved it there. The facility was top notch and the nursing staff was the best. Anytime I needed help with breast feeding and getting my son to latch on, there was a nurse available at all times to help me. I can't say enough good things about my experience there. My friend delivered her baby at Rush Copley last May and it was the first time I had been to that hospital and seen their maternity ward. One thing that you need to know in making your decision is that Rush Copley does not have a nursery. The baby stays in your room with you at all times. At Edward they have a nice nursery where they can keep your baby if you are in real need of some rest. You will not have that Luxery at Rush. I also did not think that Rush Copley was nearly as nice or clean as Edward. Edward Hospital was by far a much nicer environment!

Edward in Naperville/Bolingbrook. The dr's were very supportive of VBAC with me. They also sent in lactation speciailist with nursing and I had a private nurse... UNBELIEVABLE!! WHAT AN AWESOME PLACE

I also had my 2nd child VBAC at Rush Northshore in Skokie which was FABULOUS however I have not heard the same about the other Rush hospitals. Good Luck!

I know I'm in the minority here, but I just have to say that I had a horrible experience at Edward from start to finish. I have had two babies at Prentice (Northwestern's Women's hospital downtown) but I have never been to Rush. Unfortunately, I came away from Edward feeling like the emphasis was on better food and fancy mahogany wall panels, but not on the medical care. This is fine so long as you don't require any special medical care, but it didn't inspire any confidence. I arrived at 6:45 am for a scheduled induction, when I had been told to be there before 7am. The nurses at the admitting station all glared at me like I was a criminal. Turns out, they mistakenly had me down for a scheduled C section, and were mad at me for being late for that. If I hadn't spoken up, I would have had surgery. Then, they gave me an L&D nurse who wouldn't shut up. Literally. We learned all about her open heart surgery, and got to see the scar. We heard all about how her husband left her in the same year that both her parents died. When the anesthesiologist arrived to give me the epidural, he had to tell her to stop talking so he could ask me questions. It was terrible. There were issues with my OB too, but that wasn't the hospital's fault. Then, after my baby was finally born, there was no room in the mother/baby rooms for us, so we had to go to pediatrics. The room was miniature sized, and if I wanted to open the door to the hall I had to wheel the baby into the bathroom because there wasn't room for the door with the bassinette in the room. Anyway, it was so bad that my husband made me promise that I would never take him there even if he was dying. Good luck.

I had my baby at Edward and the entire experience was wonderful. My sister-in-law was allowed to view the birth (no video or pictures during) and they allowed my 6 & 4 yr old nephew and niece in my room to see my baby the next day. The staff was great and they have a security program in place that is OUTSTANDING! I didn't worry at all about my baby when she was out of my room. The also have a program were you can update all your friends and family with new and pictures right from the hospital via email, so you don't have to make all those calls. If I have another baby, it will be at Edward.
Also, the food wasn't bad either. :)

I would definately say Rush Copley. In my experience as a doula, Edwards is pretty medically oriented. Copley has more doctors who would support a VBAC. Some of them include Dr. Motyka and Harris who work out of Dreyer in Aurora. I believe Tara Anderson who is in the Rush Copley facility also support VBAC, not sure haven't worked with her in awhile. Best of luck with your decision.

I would definitely say Rush Copley over Edwards any day. I have had two births there of my own, and a bunch of clients there and I would recommend them.

Don't have experience with Edwards, but LOVE Rush-Copley in Aurora! Our second was at Central DuPage and I didn't like the doctors or the hospital even nearly as much. Rush-Copley was much more family friendly and I loved the experience all around. At Rush-Copley, we had an unplanned c-section with our first. Dr. Richard Tom is incredible!! I'm going back to him despite the 45 minute drive because he is so maticulous and explains everything so fully! Excellent doctor with excellent bedside manner. That whole doctor group was excellent (others were Dr. Bernardita Druhan, Dr. Andrea Jones...) whereas the DuPage group was half mediocre (sp?) and half I didn't like at all. Drastic difference between those two, but again, I don't have a lot of experience with Edwards, though I've heard good things about there generally. Best wishes to you!

Definitely Rush Copely. They have beautiful birthing rooms and room-service, which was nice. They have a great team of lactation consultants and we were allowed to film the entire birth. I delivered with Midwives, I don't know if that made a difference, but the nurses, and LC's were great and they were very family centered and breastfeeding supportive.
