Okay, so I want to build raised beds for my garden this year, and I'd like to find reclaimed/used lumber for cheap or free. I've heard it can be done, but I don't know where. Any ideas?
Also, I've heard you can get used 55 gallon plastic barrels for cheap too, like $10, but again, don't know where.
Have any of you wonderful mamas done this? Where did you find your used materials? Thanks!
EDIT: Don't worry, I will use lumber that hasn't been treated. I've got all that good info, and I've done this before, just always used new wood. Thanks, though. I appreciate it!
The habitat for humanity store is called Restore. If you have one, I would start there. Good luck!
Definitely check Freecycle--I find it MUCH more helpful than Craigslist (but it doesn't hurt to check there too).
On Freecycle you can both browse offers from others, plus request (post a "Wanted") ad for others to see.
I'm a HUGE gardener and am anxiously awaiting the upcoming "gardner's corner" of mamapedia.
I have no experience, so this is merely a suggestion - but maybe try calling a lumberyard or sawmill? Also - you can google your area and search for a used building materials store. My wife and I went to one in KC, but we can't remember the name, but it's a nationwide company. Think Goodwill, but for building supplies - sinks, cabinets, doors and some lumber as I recall. Maybe it was Habitat for Humanity?

yep - just googled and it's Habitat. BTW - several places came up for reclaimed lumber and used materials.
You should not use lumber. Those woods are treated with chemicals, that seep into your soil, as a result your food. Some of the chemicals in lumber are chromium, fungicides, and arsenic. There are many more. These chemicals are not "sealed" into the wood, and they leach. You need to use something untreated like cedar. Here is a really great post about how to make raised beds out of cedar....also very inexpensively.

Untreated wood will rot. That's why you need to use cedar, because untreated and treated wood are bad for your soil, or just won't last.
I would start with freecycle or craigslist. Then ask for "rejects" at Lowes or Home Depot or local stores. How exciting!!
wood will rot eventually so we used cinder blocks, not cheap but sturdy. lots of stuff on pinterest using pallets. that might be an idea. good luck!
