Ok so we are buying an older home from some friends of ours and well it already needed alot of TLC but their old renters (who had to be evicted for nonpayment for like 6 months of non payment of rent, gas and water) Totally destroyed the place! We have no bathroom, no kitchen a couple broken windows, the outside doors they punched holes in (not all the way through thankfully but still in bad bad shape) and there are holes all over the deck floor now. Plus they destroyed some of our friends stuff that was there and threw it all over the yard! They owned the house out right so dont have insurance on it and plus we cant prove to anyone it was them anyways. My FIL is out there now in his camper to prevent anything else and to fix it but we have to move begining of march and cant move in w/o kitchen, bathroom etc with 2 young kids and limited funds. Anyone remodeling that has kitchen cabinets bathroom stuff, plywood etc to either donate or sell for a good price? They also cut stuff on the furnace/AC so we need to get that too. Any materials will help! We will even disassemble them ourselves if you need us too. It just really upsets me that people will do something like this!!! They were only charging them $250 a month plus water and gas!! And they get upset like this just because a family with 4 kids doesn't want to support another family!! C'mon people! Ugh!!

PS: My FIL and Husband are doing all the remodeling work that needs to be done - we just need the materials to do it. :) Thanks all! :)

What can I do next?

Habitat for Humanity has a resale shop!!! Also, I would call contractors, especially in housing communities where they're building new houses. A lot of the time, if they don't need whatever they have left over, they just trash it. You could try to get ahold of whoever is in charge of materials and ask if you can work out a deal for what they have left. They get the stuff at a serious discount, so you might could by it for super cheap, or hopefully get it free.
Good luck!!!

Go to the Re Store, it's run by the Habitat for Humanity folks. They have absolutely everthing you need at really good prices. There is one on South Grove just south of I-35 and W.Berry, the other location is in River Oaks just south of Jacksboro Hwy (Henderson) on River Oaks Blvd. about 1/2 mile on the left. They have different merch at each store and you may have to go several times to find just what you want. There is also an "old house junk yard" on Montgomery St. just North of I-30 near the Antique Mall. For lumber etc. Forest Hill Lumber has the best prices on wood siding that will match the original wood. I have been remodeling with no money for several years, I have gotten Andersen Windows at the RE Store for less than $100!

Your friends carried no insurance on the house? Even if paid for, they would be responsible if something terrible had happened, like carbon-monoxide poisoning, fire, someone got hurt on premises...the list is endless. Always, always have insurance. We carry an umbrella policy for $1 million and it "travels" with us, cars, house, etc....I believe we pay less than 200 a year for this, and are increasing it this year. See if your friends homeowner policy (for the house they live in) extends to any properties they own. Plus, if they bought the house, even at auction, there must have been before pictures....plus a written lease. Never-the-less, we have actually built our homes (took a course years ago) but some things I won't do-anything to do with gas or furnace. (Ok replacing water heaters, etc.) but not the main furnace, unless you have experience. Also, your friends really can't blame anyone but themselves, they didn't protect their property. For rent of $250 for a home, well it had to be in pretty bad shape to begin with. I would check at Habitat and also in the papers for some odd lot items, sounds like a small home, so flooring you should be able to get from Home Depot or Lowes, remnants dept. Watch paper for used fridge, oven, etc. for people doing remodels & upgrading. What happened to the appliances, or was the house condemned prior to the tenants? Did they just take the toilet, tub, etc? Why do you need plywood? For the roof? Or, are the floors rotten? I would def. invest in an alarm system, fence, and dog for inside if your FIL needs to camp out there, it's not just the people who lived there that he's worried about. Plus, didn't anyone go over occasionally to check on the property? Hmmmm.

A must, when remodeling.

Last year our church did some service work with seniors. We got just about everything there.

And I have a friend that does remodeling for a living. So if you guys find that you can't do something, and want to hire a handyman. His name is Jon Drass, and his phone is ###-###-####.

Good Luck,

Hi A.-

That is a real shame. Most people would love an opportunity for that kind of rent $, etc. I dont have cabinets, doors, but, will have a washer and dryer pd $800.00 for both asking $250.00, that are alittle over two years old (maytag)a refrigerator (roper)white pd $800.00 asking $200.00, side by side w/ water and icemaker and a built in microwave pd $250.00 asking $100.00. I am moving around the beginning of March 2008 and if possible dont want to pay to move the stuff. All appliances are in good condition (I take care of my stuff).

Let me know, if you are interested.

You might check the ReStore. It is a Habitat for Humanity donation center where they sell items to the public for cheap. I believe the money then benefits Habitat for Humanity. Here is there website: http://www.trinityhabitat.org/restore/index.html
