Hi my name is Jessica i just recently had my son on 2-11-09. I had i guess labor bleeding i dont know what to call it for about two weeks after i had him than i completely stopped bleeding. About a month later i had a regular period and still have not had one this month. I dont know what is normal?! I am worried i might be pregnant again but how will i know due to my hormones still being out of wack and my body being nothing like it used to be. I took a pregnancy test and it came up negative...I guess im just really worried.

What can I do next?

You can already be ovulating, even when breastfeeding, just not getting periods--so be careful & use protection.
It's been a year now, and I still haven't had a period either!

If you are breastfeeding, then about 4-6 months. If you are breastfeeding then no worries. It's completely normal.

Tracy P was right on the money!! My son will be 1 years old on 5/12 and I still have not had my period. I have been nursing exclusively (actually I pump full time) so was told to wait until I am done pumping and it should return like normal. If you do not want another baby right away, use extra caution since you have no idea when you are going to ovulate.

Hi i had my child on 2-13-09 and i am going through the same things and it is normal it takes normally 4 to 5 months for some people to get regular again. As long as you worry stress and worry can also prevent it from comming. My doc told me to refrain from sex about a week before i am supposed to get it, and i did so i think it is starting to regulate now, but i also have to wait till next month to see. But relax and dont worry if you need more support call your docs office and they can always check you out just to give you a little bit more security that you are ok. I have had 4 kids now and i went through it wit all of them. I know it is frustrating but things will be ok....And congrats on the new little one kids keep us on our toes and add so much joy to our lives....

Hi Jessica,
It has been a minute sence I gave birth, but I do understand your worry, but I do remember the worry, just try to take precaution not to get pregnant and your period will regulate itself in 2 to 3 months, With my first son it took almost 4 months for my period to regulate, on the other hand my second son it was only the second month and it went back to normal. I would guess your body just has got to get use to the idea that it just gave birth, (SMILE)
GOOD LUCK, and try to relax your mind, that might help the situation.

Are you breastfeeding? If you are it could be quite awhile before your body regulates. I know its frustrating, but it just takes awhile, hang in there.

Hi J.,
Completely empathyze with your concern. This is one of the areas I really wished I'd been prepped better for before I had my daughter. After my post-birth bleeding ended (took about two weeks) I didn't get anything - no period, no spotting, no monthly cramps, nothing - until the 10th month. I went back on the breast-feeding pill at 6 months and breastfed until 7 months and it still took three months after that! And like some of the other responders I skipped a month here, had a light month there, totally wacky until about 15 months. It's been normal for over a year now, but it was a long and anxious ride to get there. If you don't want to call your doctor, you can always call the office and ask to speak to a nurse. I did that with mine a lot and they were always very kind and reassuring. They'll let you know if it's anything to be concerned about, but from what you've described, I'm sure you're fine. Remember to practice safe sex though! You can definitely get pregnant again while nursing.

Jessica -
My Aiden was born almost exactly a year before your Aiden. how funny! He was born on 2-10-08. I didn't get a period again until just after Christmas - 10 months later. Since then it's been pretty irregular, sometimes really light, sometimes normal, and not on any sort of schedule that I can figure out. I asked my doctor and she said that's totally normal, particularly if you're breastfeeding. You might want to give your doctor a call and see if she's concerned about it or not.

Congrats on the birth of your son. Yes, your body needs time to regulate itself again. As others have said, breastfeeding will delay getting a cycle back for several months. Not that it makes you pregnant-proof! Make sure you are comfortable talking to your doctor before your six-week checkup, at the appt and after. You need to take care of yourself as well as the baby. I would also recommend that you subscribe to a parenting magazine and/or find a new mom book to find out what is "normal" and what to expect for yourself and your son in these first few months. Good luck.

Bleeding or spotting is normal for some people. Your bodys' way of cleansing iself from any leftovers that may be hangin around. If it continues your dr. may want to do a DNC (scraping). Remember, you're sopose to wait for six weeks before sexual activity.

Are you breastfeeding? If so, it could take anywhere from 6 months until you are done to regulate. If not, it can still take around 6 months before you see a pattern emerge. Ask your OB if you have any questions, that's what they are there for!!! :)

Hi! Congratulations on your new baby! I have two children and it time it took about 6 months for me to become 100% back to normal.......if you are not pg, then I would just expect it to take a little bit of time. Your body is a complicated machine. If you are stressed, tired etc. your body may compensate for that by not bringing your period on. Plus after pregnancy your hormones are all over the place.....that may be another cause for a late period too. If you are super worried go see your dr. otherwise, I would just wait it out.

It usually takes a few months to get back to normal but as several of my friends can attest, you can certainly get pregnant again. It is possible that you ovulate before you get a period and then get pregnant so you don't have a period. So if you don't want to be pregnant right now, birth control is needed. If you don't have insurance coverage for it, the Illinois Healthy Women program may be an option. It provides reproductive healthcare including birth control for free to women here in Illinois. You can apply at this website:

I bled for 6-7 weeks after my babies were born. You need to wait several months after you stop nursing to regulate your period. You are all out of whack right now. Give it time.

Jessica, you don't say whether you're breastfeeding. If so, my experience my be insightful. I got my first period two months post-partum with my son. Then I stopped ovulating. I'm now 15 months post-partum and got my first period since then this morning :). I have been breastfeeding on demand the whole time. Long stretches of not nursing (at night, for example) can cause ovulation & period, but then, apparently, your body can reverse itself if night feedings increase. btw, I've never heard of ovulating w/o a period (unless you're pregnant), but you can have a period w/o ovulating.

Hi J.,

You can, of course, check with your Gyn, but I think it's normal for a post-delivery mom to have a very irregular period for a little. I bled for 8 weeks straight after my son was born 2/26/08, and then I didn't have anything until December. I had a VERY small period in December, and then nothing again until March '09, when I had a normal period, and again this month, a normal period. So it took me a YEAR to get back to normal.
