Bleeding in Between Periods

I'm trying to see if anyone else has had the same problem. I have currently been having my period like I normally do but for the past two months I have had bleeding in between them. It usually last for a day or two but enough bleeding that I need to wear a pad.
I had my daughter 21 months ago and finished breastfeeding her at 18 months. I called the Dr and got a appt for Thursday but when I called at first they wanted to know if I wanted to be put on birth control because they were like if that is the case we can just put the prescription in for you. I don't want to be put on BC. I want to know what is causing it. Not just a quick fix and all. Never had any problems like this. Always had a perfect period..lasts 6 days and exactly every 28 days. Thanks again for any help or information.

What can I do next?

I had the same problem. After having my second child it started happening. Doctor really never did anything about it till I had my third child. When my third child was two my doctor did a DNC and told me I need a hystrectomy. At that time I went for a second opinion and was put on a low dosage of birth control. The problem improve greatly and I even lost 12 pounds. I felt so much better. He told me it was a hormonal problem and not to worry. I have been on for 13 years. I spot sometimes but not a big deal and I can deal with so much more. I would go to the doctor and see what they say and I would try the birth control. If you don't feel like they help you can easily get off them. I really won't worry. I hope everything works out.

Wow, you sound like me about six months ago! I finally went to the Dr and he basically told me that he could put me on birth control pills to regulate my cycle, BUT, for most women, abnormal IS normal. I feel I already have plenty of hormones, and my husband has a vasectomy, so there is REALLY no need for me to be put on more hormones. Thankfully my period HAS gotten a little better with the predictability, but is still not back to my good ole 30 days from the start of one period to the start of the next with 6 days of moderate flow :(

I wouldn't worry too much, good luck!!

Hello J.. I am on a bc pill but I still had your problem recently. I actually bleed (had to use protection) for an entire MONTH. I thought I was dying :( My doctor had me take Motrin (ibuprofen) 100 mg / hour. IE take 600mg every 6 hours. After doing that for 5 days I finally stoped and I haven't had the problem again. I have no idea why I was bleeding so much or how the Motrin helped, but it worked.

Hi J.,
What you are experiencing sounds perfectly normal to me...especially after breastfeeding. I had the same exact problem - and I was even on BC! I think it's just our body's way of getting back into sync after breastfeeding and pregnancy. It was really annoying and took a number of months before settling back into rhythm, but it was normal.
*It never hurts to have it checked out by your doctor though! :-)

Spotting in between periods is fairly common, at least for me. I was on the pill for years before I had my daughter, and I always had spotting. After I had my daughter, I went back on BC since I wasn't ready for another child, and I still had spotting. I went off the pill to TTC, and I still had spotting. It's just the way my body is. It's possible that since you just stopped nursing, your hormones just aren't back to normal yet. My doctors always told me not to worry about the spotting. There was really nothing they could do about it. Having a child really wreaks havoc on our bodies!

Yep! Good ole birth control. They use those to regulate your periods. Do you have any other health issues? Mine started out like that then they would increase. Got worse after my second son. Then I had my tubes cut, tied, burned. Still the same. Then I got the news 14 yrs later- PREGNANT! After that last one was born it got so I only bled all but 3 days a month. I was so weak, tired and fusterated that I had to have a hysterectomy. Best thing I did!

All I can say is having a baby changes everything.....EVERYTHING! It took me about 6 months after I stopped nursing my son for my periods to get back to normal. BC will help get back to normal much faster, but if you don't want to get on it, then don't. I really wouldn't mess with going to the doctor. Your body is just trying to get back to normal, and it does take a while.
Good luck!!

Do remember that your body has been through quite a bit of trauma just having the baby!! It is not uncommon for it to take a while for your periods to regulate. Going on BC may help to get you back on target. If you have had check ups and they have all been ok, it's probably just the adjustments. My periods did get kinda crazy after my pregnancies. Yes, it's irritating...and scary, but it's really not as uncommon as you think.

The best thing to do is keep a diary of your periods...and any other symptoms you might be having....cramping, nausea, etc. If they continue, then call the doctor again and have them check you.

Good luck, hon!

Hi J.!
This exact same thing happened to me! After having my third child, I would have my normal periods, but in between, I would have short little periods. After a few months of hoping it would regulate on it's own, I talked to my doctor about it and she asked if I had been tired lately....which I had been, but just assumed it was from taking care of the babies. Anyways, she ordered some blood work to be done and it turns out it was a thyroid condition. I guess it's fairly common for women to develop thyroid problems after having a baby. I started taking the medication she prescribed and I got my energy back, my periods regulated and I even lost some weight! I'm not saying that your thyroid is your problem, but it couldn't hurt to get it checked out. Good luck!!!

I've actually been experiencing the same issue for the past 5 months, and the first 4 were on bc - i just went off, because my hubby and I are working on our 3rd child, and i'm still having the same problem. I've had 2 ultrasounds with my doctor and he thinks I may have some small pallups, or that it may be due to poly-cystic ovaries - he's just having me wait & see how the next few months go. I would definately recommend seeing your doctor in person and ask for an ultrasound.

Good luck!

Hello,
I have experienced the same...however my bleeding continued for over ninety days couple with excruciating pain (cramping.) My doctor said that I had a lot of scar tissue in and around my uterus...which has also led to endometriosis.

I had surgery burning the scar tissue in my uterus (it was same day surgery.) My periods are now back to a normal schedule, but I still experience a lot of menstrual pain.

I'm told that most women who have this surgery have much lighter periods and love the results. Unfortunately, I'm one of the few that didn't get that end of the stick...but at least my bleeding is now under control...and for that, I'm grateful.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to email me with any questions.

Thanks!!!

Hi J.,

I'm having the same problem. I am 41, have two children and have been on the pill since I was 21 until I had my children. I do have endometriosis and I've had my tubes tied. I just had ablation surgery (since I will not be having any other children) but it did not help. I know I have a cyst on my right ovary but my doctor isn't concerned about that and I have complete faith in him. Since I'm not having any pain associated with my endometiosis, he isn't inclined to do surgery for that. I go back to see him in two days and my best guess is that he will put me on the pill again. I guess at this point I prefer that to another surgery as I've been put under 4 times in the past 3 years. (two c-sections, gallbladder and ablation). The doctor I see has offices in Bath and Green Ohio. Let me know if you would like his name.

This could be normal. A book I recommend is 'What your Doctor May Not have Told You about Premenopause' by John Lee MD. The reasoning for many difficulties women have is very well laid out as well as solutions for them. Premenopause is the time between the ages of 30 to 50 in a woman's life and I think it is real helpful for younger gals to get this information too. Dr. Lee uses natural progesterone for many bleeding problems and I can say that it has helped me. It is a much closer match to the body's own progesterone with no side effects.

I had those symptoms many years ago (in the late 70's)and my doctor then said that the birth control pill I was on at the time was causing the walls of my uterus to slough off. I really don't know if he was right or wrong. 15 years later the same symptoms arrived and my obgyn diagnosed endometriosis. He did a laporoscopy <sp> and put me back on birth control, and everything turned out fine.

One main reason could be your ovulating. Some women ovulate "hard" and it can cause bleeding, also during this if the egg isn't fertilized it "dies" and goes into the uterine lining also causing bleeding. Don't just assume that even if it's not exactly "mid month" your not ovulating. Because most women, once they've had children rarely go back to a normal 28-30 day cycle. I have found after kids that it's usually 3 weeks into the month when I do, and it's not uncommon for me to have spotting during that time. Also if you could ever see a chart of a woman's hormonal fluctuation during the month you would also understand why some women bleed at certain times of the month. Hope this makes you feel better and honestly I wouldn't waste time and money at the doctor. The only reason I would is if the bleeding gets worse. Hope this helps.

I just had one thought, some women bleed a little when they ovulate, maybe that is the case with you. Any pain or cramping? Some women have "middle pains" too when they ovulate. And I totally understand about the birth control! Be atrong advocate for yourself and maybe do some research online.

I wish you luck! I'm curious as to what the Dr. thinks.

I'd be leary of a doctor who just wants to throw you on birth control without even seeing you!! That sends up major red flags. There could be any number of reasons causing you to bleed in between, and you should be given the proper attention by your doctor.

If your periods were always that regular (you are so lucky!!) and suddenly there is a change, then I would get another opinion from a doctor or insist you doctor look into it. It could very well be just a glitch in your hormonal balance since you've stopped breastfeeding and your body is learning how to function again, but I would be a little unsettled by a doctor who would make a diagnosis (or lack of one) over the phone and rush to give you BC pills.

if it's around day 14ish, it's ovulation bleeding. i had that a few times.

it could also be implantation bleeding... if you're pregnant... but that would be a different time in the month, i think more like around the time your period is supposed to come.

you can get a progesterone cream at a health food store, it's much gentler than BC... if you feel like you want to do somthing to help your cycle get reestablished.

Hi J.,
So many things can cause spotting between periods. I am currently having the same problem, but I know mine is related to my thyroid levels. You could be dealing with something similar as the thyroid can change after a pregnancy but so can many other things, so it's best you get checked by the doctor. They will probably want to schedule an ultrasound to rule out any ovarian cysts, etc.
Good luck!
