When Do Boys Typically Walk?

Hello.
My son is 13 months old and the best kid I could ever hope for! He crawls fast, pulls himself up and cruises around the furniture but he doesn't walk on his own yet. When do babies (boys especially) usually start walking? He can walk if we hold his hands and with a toy that he walks behind but he just seems like he doesn't want to walk on his own yet. He is a very cautious kid so that could be part of it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

What can I do next?

they walk when they feel like it! He's doing fine, don't worry.. some kids take a little longer, but it's nothing to worry about right now.. he sounds perfect!!!I've heard of kids not walking until after they are 2.. some kids just wait longer.. and you know what - the longer he doesnt' walk, the less running YOU do! LOL

T.,
Don't sweat it! In a blink of an eye he will do it on his own. Our son could do all the same things as yours and one day he just took off. My husband and I sat down on the floor and let him walk back and forth between the two of us. We gradually moved further apart. It seemed like one day he was webble wobbling around and the next he was a pro. Jack will walk in his own time. The best of luck to you!

My son started walking right after his 1st birthday. Trust me, once he gets it, and from what you are saying he has the basics down, he will be running within a week. If all the signs are there, I would just enjoy the last few weeks without having to rearrange and babyproof your whole house!

My son started walking at 12 months HOWEVER children especially boys will go at their own pace. My husband and I used to sit on the floor about 4-5 feet apart and he started to walk back and forth between us. Then we slowly added distance between us. he'll get there. he'll surprise you and just get up and start walkin gone day.

There is no exact date but I do know that My son didn't crawl until he was 12 months old then instantly walked. We actually sat at two diffrent sides of the room and used mini mm to bribe him to let go of the couch and it worked within a week..

Hi! Well I def. don't think it's a boy/girl thing, it's depending on the child and when he/she is ready. My daughter started walking the week of her 1st b-day, and now at 14 mths., she is RUNNING all over, she's crazy. Just for another comparison, my parents neighbor has a 15 mth old boy and still isnt walking, and a friend of mine has a boy and he started walking at 11 mths...so it all depends. He will let you know when he's ready! Just enjoy your little boy...time goes by so fast, don't push him to do anything! : )

It's not really a boy/girl thing. Some kids just take longer to walk than others. My nephew just started at Easter and he is 16 months old. He is also a cautious kid. He just wan't in a hurry. Don't worry- he'll be walking soon and then you'll wish he would stay still! hee hee :) -K.

Hi T., my granddaughter did the same thing, i don't know how much open space u have , but that was a problem here, get him into more open spaces it will encourage him not to hang on to things as much cause frankly there won't be as much to, it worked with my granddaughter very well.

My son started to walk at about 11 months. But if your son is cruising and pushing toys then I wouldn't worry. They do things when they're ready.

My son didn't walk until 15 months. He was doing all the same things as your son, except he didn't crawl until 11 months. I wouldn't worry until 18 months, if he is still not walking, then I would talk to his pediatrician, otherwise he is still well within normal range.

The average walking age is between 12-18 months. So, some walk much earlier & some later. My son walked at 8 mos & my daughter is still working on it (12mos). So, don't worry, he'll get there. Kids that have an efficient way to get around, ususally walk later, & it sounds like your son is a great crawler.

Hi T.~ I wouldn't be concerned if I were you. It sounds like he knows how to get around and is able to bear weight. All children are different. My oldest son (also Jack)walked at about 10 1/2 months, but my youngest Ken didn't even try to walk until he was closer to 14 1/2 months. Enjoy this time, once he's off and running you'll be running too! Have a nice day~ J.

HI T., every "child" is different with every aspect of development. I don't think it matters if a child is a boy or a girl. My daughter started walking when she was 10 mths old and so didn't my friends son. He'll start when he wants to. Does he have one of those walkers, the toy that has wheels and a handle, that may help. And lots of encouragement from you that he'll be safe because you're right there to help him. Good luck. : )
