What's a Good Timeline for Post Partum Bleeding?

Hey all, I think you are the best at sharing your personal experiences, so I want to know...how long did YOU have to wear that pantiliner after your dear one was born? Do you think C-section/vs. vaginal birth is relevant here? I feel great, besides having not enough sleep with an 8 week old and a 2 year old. I have NO fever, NO smelly funk (I'm only saying that because that's what they say to watch for in case of infection) no real fatigue, and I'm able to pump/breastfeed no problem.
So, just curious, did any of you still have to wear spotting protection 8+ weeks out? I cannot for the life of me remember whether this is the same as my last pregnancy.

Hi there! I also have an 8 week old and a 2 year old! So, I know how you feel!

I had c-sections with both of my kids. With my daughter I bled for about 4 weeks (never heavy) but with my son I bled up until about 2 weeks ago (only heavy at first). I'm sure it's because I was doing too much with him (having to run around after my daughter as well). If you are able, maybe try to rest a little more if you notice the bleeding is heavier. You can always ask your doctor if you are worried (though I hate doing that myself!!) Where is your salon? Hope you feel better soon!

It's been a few years, but if I remember correctly, by 6 weeks, most of my major stuff was over with, but I think I had to wear a liner for quite a while. If you are too concerned, you can always call your doctor, but I don't think 8 weeks is too long for that. If it is still happening in another 2 weeks, you might think about going in. Congradulations on the little one and having no problems!

You should definitely talk to your OB... I stopped bleeding at 3-4 weeks and then started at 8 weeks soaking maxis... come to find out I had retained some placenta and needed a D&C. Don't want to scare you, but infection from retained placenta can be really bad. If you are just leaking the good ol' tan yuck, no worries. I'm a nurse and am on my feet a lot and also have a 2 yr. old and a 10 week old, so I'm right htere with ya! - E.
p.s. also with second kiddo it seems to take a little longer to stop leaking if you are breastfeeding!

I tried answering this this past weekend, but I kept getting a message that the site was down for maintenance..then when I was able to answer a different one, I still got the same message by now. Hopefully you got some good answers.. but I'll give my two cents just in case... :)

6-8 weeks is normal.. depending on your activity level.. if you do not get proper rest it could go longer. It can stop and start again, too.

C-section doesn't matter.... the reason for the bleeding is that the spot on your uterine wall has to heal where the placenta was attached - it detaches with birth whether you have a normal birth or a C-section. If it stops and you try to move some furniture around.. you may move the healed spot around enough to loosen up the clotting and start up the bleeding again. So there is a reason the doctor says 6- weeks revovery.. give your body a chance to heal. Nursing also helps my contracting the uterus to help it get back to its pre-pregnancy size and thus helping shrinking the place where the placenta was so it can heal. So don't be surprised if you get a little bit of cramps while nursing because of this.

So rest, drink your water and take it easy.... no strenuous exercise or moving furniture etc. the "rule of thumb" is to not pick up anything heavier than your baby.

Congratulations and best wishes

I had to wear liners for about 12weeks I had a c-section so I don't know if that makes a diff. most of the major stuff was over at about 8-9 weeks if you had a c-section the chance that there is any placenta left is very low and when I talk to my doc they said if it gets heavy again and there is no major clots that it could just be getting your period early

I didn't have an issue.. but I have only had c-sections, and they clean you out pretty.

With my 2nd baby I definitely bled longer, but I also had an IUD placed at my 6 week pp visit - so that could have had an impact. As long as it's light and getting lighter, it's probably fine, but you could also put in a quick call to your OB's office. I did at one point and I felt better after a quick chat.

I have three kids and had my last a year ago. I was bleeding for about 8 weeks with some spoting after for about 2-3 more weeks. If you are concerned call your doc. They are the best to determine if all is ok. Congrats on the baby!

Hi, If you are still having pale discharge, this is ok. It can be a sign that you are up and doing too much. Your uterus should be out of range when palpating. If it is still somewhat enlarged, then you will still bleed. These are signs of poor recovery. I would suggest long nursing breaks, rest, optimal nutrition and cleanliness. Good luck
