Depends on the garment and if it runs big or small. She's been in 2T shirts for a while, but I bought some 18 mo. pants because 2T were just huge and 24 mo. fell off her no-butt. If the pants are too long, she spends more time pulling on them than playing. I do have 3 and 4 T things set aside in her closet. I am more likely to buy pants at her size and shirts/dresses/pjs slightly bigger. I will also buy shoes if I see the same ones we like on sale in bigger sizes. I know she'll get to them eventually. She always needs sneakers.

I buy the next size up, out of season, at outlet stores. I'm cheap and end up paying a dollar per item. (once they are past the month increments of clothing)

I also buy the next size up at mom-to-mom sales.

Next size (or 2 or 3, if there's a great sale!). My girl turned 2 in December and is already wearing 3T clothes! Not sure where she got the height (dad & I are both 5'4")--aren't genetics amazing! I do buy the "on sale" seasonal clothes in the size I think will fit her next year.

1 to 2 sizes up UNLESS it's for a special event OR shoes. Special event clothes fit, and shoes are 1/2 size up. I buy expensive, sturdy clothes, however (kiddo doesn't go easy on his clothes)... so they typically last for at least a year if not 2.

Depends on when they will be wearing the clothes. If I am buying clothes for them to wear now, I get the size they are in. I find a good sale but they don't need clothes now then I go a size up if they will wear it sometime during the next year.

it matters on their needs and where they fall in their sizes.
If the size they ar in is fitty big and very well then I buy that size. if it fits like a glove or a little short, I buy the next size. If the item is on clerance and there is no need in the wardrobe for that seasonal item right now, then I buy what I think would be next years size.

If I buy for friends I buy 1 outfit now and 1 next size up.

I usually buy a little on the big size, not too big... they are in and out of sizes so fast... Thank goodness my sister has older boys to get hand me downs from.

Depends on the size, company that makes them. There are a few brands that always shrink on me...so I will buy 2 sizes bigger so it allows for shrinkage and she can continue to wear them awhile.
My daughter is 2 and she still uses some 12 mo pants as pajamas or around the house clothes.
All her dresses last year I bought in 18 months, and they still fit (well most of them) although some are short, but we just put pedal pushers underneath them. =)

My baby is about 7 months old right now and since I didn't have many left overs from the last boy we are buying new again. I started when I was pregnant buying ahead of time. Right now I am buying 18 month winter clothing because that is what is on sale right now. I bought all my summer stuff last fall. At times I do purchase something that fits right now, but I try as hard as I can to buy ahead to save the money.

It depens. Right now my DD is wearing 12m size... but she just grew into it, and I don't have a ton so I will buy 12m and 18m sizes. Once I feel she has a decent 12m wardrobe, then I will start only buying 18m sizes (unless I see something super cute I can't wait to see her in. lol) It's handy, because my niece is 5 months younger than my DD, so I can just pack them up and send them to my SIL as needed. :)

It depends what season. Like right now my daughter weighs about 23 pounds and is currently wearing 12-18 months or 18 months (depending on brand.) For the summer she has all 18-24 months, or 24 months. Since it is suppose to be spring soon, I have gotten a couple outfits in 18 months and a couple in 24 months. For coats & bathing suits I go up a size. There have been a few long-sleeve items I've bought that are 2T.

I've found that once my twins turned one, a size pretty much lasted the season. So, for summer they were 18 months, winter was 2T, now this summer will be 3T. I've been sticking with a size for the season.

I have a very tall/skinny toddler. I have to buy his current size for the current season, or his clothing physically wouldn't stay on his body. I buy the next size up when I find it on clearance for later seasons.

Depends on what you need, how quickly your kiddo seems to grow, how tall your kiddo is and what is on sale!

My first grew very quickly from size to size and we bought the next size up. We also had plenty of clothes due to the baby shower and grandparents.

My second is growing very slowly (11 months old wearing 6-9 and is very short). Going into a new season, I'm cautious about buying too many things in size 12 months. I also have some clothes left over from my oldest.

During end of season mark downs, I try to buy clothes for the next season based on how big I think they will be. If not, I only paid a few dollars and can resell it at a kids' sale for nearly the same price.

If you have a shorter kid than others, you may not want to buy the clothes in too many sizes up.
