What is the general height/weight of a 18 mo. old? I have a 12 mo. old and am trying to decide if 18 mo. winter coat/clothes is a smart size to buy!? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Each child is different and may wear different sizes in different brands.

If you buy a slightly oversized jacket with elastic wristbands, you may get 2 seasons out of one jacket and it will still fit when layering clothes underneath.

Keep in mind that you NEED a washable one because it will get washed frequently.

I have 18 mo old twins that wear 18-24 month clothes but their winter jackets I got a 2T because they will have layers of clothes underneath the jacket.

Good morning, Rachel. Look at the weight your daughter is now when deciding what size to buy her. She probably will not gain more than a few pounds over the season. My daughter has always been a little better than average for height and weight, but I think the "average" 18 month old weighs around 20-25 pounds.

You can find this info online or in What to Expect the Toddler Years. My two kids were always below average in height and weight so it all depends on the size of you and your husband on how big your kid will be. I would think 18 month clothing would be way too big for a 12 month old unless he is way above average in weight and height.

Every child is different. Neither of my girls wore what their age was. My oldest was 12 months wearing 2T's and my youngest was 12 months wearing 18 month. Take your little one with you to the store and try on different sizes. Find one that is a little big now, that way he/she can grow into it some and not outgrow it by the end of winter. You may want to purchase two coats in case he/she hits a really hard growth spurt. For one of mine (don't think both) we bought two coats one year (don't remember how old, just remember having two coats, two different sizes) and we used both that year. My oldest was and still is tall for her age and would grow out of stuff in December that we bought in August. She just won't stop growing. There is no real normal for a child's size or weight anymore. It's a guessing game until they are somewhat older. Oh, and remember different companies sizes run differently from each other (did that make sense?). So you kind of have to try on stuff like coats and jackets. Good luck and God Bless.

Every child is built differntly. But if she if in line with wearing 12mo clothes now, 18mo will work. I always irrated my kids and had them try on sizes and judged the differnce keeping in mind they will later be wearing sweaters and growning too.

For clothes, 18 months should be about right. For coats though, I'd go as big as you can without him looking silly. That way you can try to get a couple of winters out of it.

I always buy a little big to give room to grow. You can always use big stuff later on if she's right between two sizes right now, but if it's a little small, you won't be able to use if for long. This is especially true for coats--get all the use you can for your $$.

You honestly just have to try things on! Different brands, run different in sizes, so you have to take that into consideration. My 2.5y/o can wear from a 3T to a boys XS! So we just have to try stuff on. It also helps to buy just a bit larger in coats, as it's going on over other clothes, plus that way he/she will grow into it.

my son turned 12 months in september last year - i bought a 24 month old coat thinking it would last through this year...it was pretty much way too big all last year and now it's almost too small! i think 18 month would probably be perfect. i'm not sure about height/weight norms, it was a long time ago (and my son was in the 97th percentile for height and weight so yours is probably smaller than mine was anyway!)

Good Morning Rachel, Yes kids are very different in their growth patterns. One of our gr son's just turned 4 and wears 4T if the pants have elastic in them. Our 3 yr old gr son is wearing 5T's in pants and shirts. His 10 month old Brother is wearing 12mo's and they are getting snug.

We are looking to buy winter coats also, so I will take each one and try them on and then get one size larger if I can. The layering is very important in winter. Elastic cuffs are a must for little folks though.

Best of everything and God Bless each one of you

A lot of it depends on the coat brand. I have found huge differences between old navy, carters, circo, and other brands. I would advise you to try it on and make sure it has a little room to grow. Keep in mind that he will probably be wearing bulkier clothes underneath it. At 12-18 months, my daughter who is right in the middle of the height/weight chart wore 12 months in some brands and 24 months in others.

I've got an 18 mo old that can wear things from 6 months all the way up to 3T. It really does depend on the clothing. As with most women's clothes, better brands tend to run truer to size. Cheaper clothes tend to run smaller and shrink up more when washed, etc. For a winter coat, I'd go ahead and buy on the bigger side just because you will have layers under it and who knows, you might even get use out of it next year depending on how quickly your child grows. I know we had stuff we wore last summer that got used again this year. If you want something that will last more than one season, you might check out Hanna Andersson. There stuff is sized to fit a very broad range and it wears really well. It's not cheap, but you can always find great condition stuff on eBay and consignment. They also have great sales on their website.

A lot of brands will have the weight/height on the tag.

18M should be okay, but again it really depends on the brand and the size of your child. (ie, 20th percentile vs. 95th!) My son and niece are only three months apart, but my son could be in 18-24M while my niece was in 9-12M!

As far as shopping garage sales, our neighborhood is having a big sale this weekend - Somerbrook off of 291 and Stark (NW side of Liberty). I'm getting rid of all of my baby stuff (clothes, swing, high chair, etc.) and I know a lot of my neighbors are too! Come on out if you can - it will be the 12th and 13th.

Just a suggestion, with winter creeping up on us, try shopping second hand stores and garage sales. You can find great merchandise very cheap (I got a Land's End coat for my son - looks brand new - $5). Then, you don't have to worry about your little one out growing it to fast. You could buy 2 different sizes and don't have much invested. After all, they usually only get 1 year out of them unless you buy them to big.

there isn't much difference in size 12 mos and 18 mos clothes so as for a coat you may want to go to a 2T so they wear it through the winter. It may be a little big to start with but they grow so fast and will probably fit well in a month.

that is very hard to say...because it depends on his weight and heighth...my little one who will be 2 next month sometime wears 18 months and other times 24 months...jackets are OK to be big...I found it easier to buy as she grew...because too many outfits were left unworn because she did not fit them in the right season...Good Luck

my daughter is 19 months old and she is in a 2T but she now needs a 3T especially in sweatshirts tshirts etc,and no she isn't overweight not at all she is tall for age. Both of my kids never ever were in the size of their age nor close to it.Some clothing companys go by the average weight and size to make clothes but that doesn't work for every child some may need bigger or smaller.Try it on and if to snug get a size bigger.Sahm of 2 and 1 more on the way

Children all grow at different rates so this is a difficult question to answer with 100% accuracy. I think you should be safe with an 18 month size, but if in doubt at the least, buy a size 24 months. Good Luck! K.

I have found that generally, the sizes listed on the labels are appropriate. For example, a size 18 months usually has fit from about 12 months old until 18 months old. Then the 24 month size fits from 18 months usually until about their second birthdays. This was the case with all three of my kids, even though my daughters were small for their ages and my son was HUGE.

I can't remember what size is "normal". But both my girls wore 18 month clothes at a year. And regardless, you want the winter coat to be a little big b/c they will have other clothes like sweatshirts on sometimes under it. Have a great day:)!
