I have strep throat and the throat pain in horrible. Even drinking water hurts so bad going down. I am starving and have been surviving by sipping small amounts of water at a time. Can any one give me suggestions on how to eat without all the pain? Thanks

What can I do next?

You could try some chicken & stars soup. I know it sounds childish, but everything in it is small and easy to swallow and the saltiness of the broth can be soothing. The little start shaped noodles are tiny, but a least they will give you a little substance. Jello goes down pretty well too.
I feel for you. Strep is no fun.
Get well soon!

Bare with me, here.

My children used to get strep ALL THE TIME. They would get it, pass it around, any by the time the last one got it, the first one got it AGAIN and it started all over. I am not kidding. I was at my wits end! Then, when they were finally "cured", 6-12 months later, they'd start the whole shebang again. UGH.

I was talking to an elderly woman during an outbreak of strep at my house, and she laughed and said, "You don't need doctors to cure strep. All you need is apple cider vinegar!". So I asked her about that, and she said that where she came from (somewhere in the South, don't remember where exactly??), everyone used Apple Cider Vinegar to cure strep. I thought she was crazy, but I was willing to try anything at that point (including and not limited to voodoo lol Just kidding!!), so I did it. Now, my kids haven't had strep in just over 7 years.

What you do is take a glass of water (8-12 ounces) and add between 10-20 drops of apple cider vinegar to it. SIP at the water (don't chug!), and it WILL heal you. What happens is the cider vinegar changes the PH of your throat, and the strep can't live there anymore! HA!

It really, really does work. Please try it (I know I'm not a doctor and I can't prescribe, but it REALLY works). Everyone I know thinks I'm nuts when I suggest it, but when they try it, it works.

Then, any time you feel like you're starting to get a sore throat from here on out, do the cider vinegar in water. If it's just a normal sore throat, it's not going to do much, but if it's strep, you won't get it again!

That said, on the "what to eat" front:
Yogurt thinned with some milk (good bacteria will help your body fight the infection)

Fruit and yogurt smoothies (you need fruits and vegetables to boost your immune. Try these two smoothies:
1 banana
2 large kale leaves
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 carrot
1 apple, cored
2 TBS toasted wheat germ
Half a cup water
Blend until smooth.

Or:

2 cups chocolate milk (I prefer soy, rice, hemp or almond for nutrition)
1 banana
Half a cup of greek yogurt
1 kale leaf
2 TBS toasted wheat germ
1 TBS sesame tahini
1 TBS peanut butter
1 TBS ground flax seed

Warm (NOT hot) chicken broth, add some miso for extra nutrition! Add some VERY SOFT cooked noodles for some substance. Add a little bit of vinegar for extra health benefits. :)

Mashed avocados with cocoa powder, agave or maple syrup and a little salt. Thin it down with a chocolate milk of any variety (dairy, hemp, soy, etc). It's kind of like a pudding and is VERY nutritious. Because of the good fats in avocado, it also will give you some "substance".

Ice cream, stirred until it's soft (there are studies now that show that dairy does NOT produce excess mucous, as previously thought)

How about a spoonful of honey? mix in some chopped raw garlic and your sore throat will probably go away completely, at least for a few hours. You can sip on garlic tea for a similar effect. Just make sure you have some food in your stomach first or else it will make you nauseous.

sage, mullein, licorice and marshmallow (the herb, not the candy) are all good for sore throats, so a tea with any combination of these and honey will help. boiled water soup (a strong garlic soup actually) is very good whenever you have a cold-type illness. mash garlic cloves (as many as you can stand, make the house reek!) and add to 4 cups of water. don't chop or mince the garlic, just mush it with the flat of a knife. add a teaspoon of salt and boil for 10 minutes. add some sprigs of sage, fresh cilantro, thyme, and lemon peel (naturally omit any you don't like), cover and let stand for 15 minutes. fish out the herbs. put a piece of bread (stale is fine) in the bottom of a hot bowl, cover with freshly grated parmesan, ladle the hot broth over it, with plenty of garlic pieces.
it's so good you might want it even if you're not sick.
feel better soon!

Banana soft serve : peel a few bananas, break each into 4 or 5 pieces, and place in freezer until frozen. Once frozen, process in food processor for AT LEAST 5 minutes, scraping down sides occasionally. It will eventually become the consistency of soft serve ice cream. You could add frozen berries, cocoa powder, etc. If you're not crazy about the taste of straight up bananas.

I'd also recommend smoothies with some greens added. You're body needs good nutrients to heal.

I hope you feel better soon--

I don't know if they sell it in your area, but Throat Coat tea by Traditional Medicinals is wonderful. Also, if you have any whole cloves, you can chew them. They slightly numb your tongue and throat for maybe 10, 15 minutes, so you can eat a little more comfortably. I hope you are feeling better soon!

Getting my throat a little numbed up with a popsicle always helped me be able to eat a little more, stick to things like yogurt or applesauce and if you are even able to only eat a few spoonfuls, sometimes if you really thin it out iwth milk ( or even with instant you can use water) Oatmeal is at least healthy and filling.
Take something for pain that helps alleviate swelling...I am so sorry. My cousins used to swear that "drinking" hot jello was soothing ( they would just mix the packet of jello with hot water) strange, but when you hurt you will try just about anything I suppose. Tea always soothes a sore throat for me. Have you tried making runny eggs? At least those would slide easily down your sore throat, I would avoid salt though...ouchy!

Yogurt either out of the refrigerator or freezer. The cultures will help with the strep too.

I'm sorry, strep is awful! Unfortunately, it's going to hurt to eat anything for a day or so after you start the antibiotics. Ice cream, yogurt, applesauce are your best bets, things that just slide down - but the swallowing will hurt. I hope you feel better soon.

Sometimes I find with a sore throat it hurts more when I don't eat and feels better after I eat or drink. Anything hot or cold that has been suggested could work. My kids like my easy Ramen chicken soup. It is just chicken broth with carrots, celery, cooked chicken ( plus any other veggies you want) and a package or two of the ramen noodles. If you boil the veggies for 10 minutes or so everything is pretty soft. You could definitely add some garlic, onion or spices if you want.

try a sore throat numbing spray, like chlorosceptic. If you can take away the pain, you might manage to eat something. otherwise, all the thin, soupy foods suggested below get a thumbs up from me.

I second the honey. I just had strep a month ago and I swear the honey cured me. It was so much more effective than the throat spray. It coated my throat enough that I was able to eat other things. Grilled cheese, scrambled eggs, milkshakes, pudding cups. Feel better!

Ugh...that kind of throat pain is awful :(

Salty soups, like chicken noodle. Also foods that are slimy and thin like applesauce. You might have to try a few different things before you find what works for you. Sometimes hot makes it better, sometimes cold.

Stick with the slurpees, snow cone, or warm broth. Avoid anything with dairy as it can cause mucous and clearing your throat would be very painful.

I have had strep 2x since March ~ my favorite thing to eat/drink was a slurpee! It was ice cold so it helped the swelling and felt good on my sore throat. I also ate yogurt, soup, and drank tea. I didn't have much of an appetite.
