Hi T.! I don't think it is anything to worry about. I had very irregular or missed periods in the year after my first daughter was born, even after I stopped breastfeeding. So much so, that I had no idea that I was pregnant with my second daughter until I was 13 weeks along! Seems that it didn't affect my fertility at all! D.

unforutnately I can't offer any solutions to the problem, however, you are not alone. It has been almost a year since my last period. My daughter is almost 2. I have seen two different doctors about it and they have yet to give me any real answers. I have taken several blood tests and an ultra sound all of which have been normal. No signs of pregnancy either. They have said that two possibilities are scared lining or early menopause. If you want I will keep you updated on the newest developments. I see the doctor again in two weeks. Sorry I wasn't much help. Just wanted you to know that you aren't alone on this. :)

It can take up to a year for the body to get back to normal & regularity. You are also breastfeeding. Your doctor gave you tests and it's negative, so that's good. Don't stop breastfeeding just because of this. Give your body time to normalize. You are still young to have another baby... try not to worry too much. I'm sure it will be fine.
Take care,

It could be your hormones or it could be something I have called P.C.O.S. Poly cystic ovary syndrome (or something else) . Basically it means your hormones are not normal . I have that so i don't ovulate every month . So i can get periods very close to each other or very far apart . That can be found in a blood test . I used Clomid to have both of my children . It took 4 tries for my 1st child and 1 for my 2nd child . Good luck with your future .

Hi T.,
I'm not sure if this'll help but I had some trouble getting regular too. I wasn't sure what to do until one day I saw something on the internet about vitamin supplements that will help you be regular and have longer periods with more nutrients in each cycle. I got some Vitex (Chaseberry Tree), some Red Clover, some Paba, and took them as the bottles directed. Before I knew it I was having monthly periods each 5 days long - now I'm prego ^_^

I want to congratulate you on the birth of your child. As far as periods being so overdue, I wouldn't worry too much about that. Nature is funny, it takes it's time and I do know one thing. Worry will not make it better. Far from it. I do not know where you live, but all around the county there are medical clinics that charge very little for appoinments. Planned parenhood is a good one and will charge what you are able to pay. Try to relax, Your fertility is probably ok. Give it a little more time. By now, you may have started your periods again.

you might have thyroid problems which many women get after having a baby... i myself got hypothyroidism fewmonths after and i'll still on the medication. If you are uninsured just go to a free clinic or hospital in your area

Were you regular before you had your son? Our bodies go through lots of changes after we have a baby. My best friend had the opposite problem. Her doctor said it was not uncommon. She still ended up having 3 kids. If you don't want to go to a doctor because of insurance, you can still call your OB/GYN and ask if you should be concerned. I've never been to the site WEB MD, but it's worth a try too.
Be happy that you don't have to deal with it right now. Mine didn't come back for two months after I had my first daughter. I was kind-of sad it came back. I enjoyed not having to deal with it at the time.
Good luck!!

I'm wondering if you are very thin. Although I'm sure a doctore would've mentioned it - if your body fat is below a certain percentage, sometimes a woman's periods will stop or become irregular. A friend of mine, who is quite thin, was told she should gain 15 pounds if she wanted to have another baby. She had a tough time getting pregnant with her second - but eventually did. My advise would be to eat healthy three times a day, plus a snack and see if you get more regular. Sometimes in caring for a little one, we neglet ourselves.

Hi Twilla.

I nursed for three months and did not get my period when I stopped. I went to see my doctor two months after I stopped nursing and she couldn't see anything wrong. She then gave me a prescription (can't remember the name) to "force" my period. It did come from the medication and then "kicked into gear" after that. I am sorry I can't remember the name of the pills but I'm sure if you ask a Dr. they will have an idea of what they were.

I hope this helps you some.

Periods are usually irregular after having a baby and should normalize within the first year. Other reasons to not have periods: not ovulating, being overweight, thyroid problems, excessive exercise, too thin, among others. Have your periods always been irregular? Try and make sure to stay as normal of weight as possible. Be healthy and most likely your menstrual cycle will come back. If not, get your thyroid tested (try a free clinic in your area - usually the health department has one).

if you have no insurance, you may want to try to apply for medical and/or go to a family planning clinic, itcould be that you are anemic, or may have signs of a tubal pregnancy or early signs of adeimyosis(I hope I spelled that right). Look on Web MD on the internet

If you are nursing your son then it is quite possible that you won't have periods/ as many periods. With my first son, I nursed him for 1 year and didn't get my period until he was 10 months old. With my second, I also nursed and did not get my period until he was 9 months old. It has to do with the hormones and estrogen that you produce when you nurse. It takes your body a while to get back to normal so I wouldn't worry just yet!

I wouldn't worry number one! Our bodies go through so much hormonally during and after pregnancy. You are most likely just fine. Your body must adjust to your hormonal changes - which may be permanently changed - as in until your next child. You know if you have been careful as in to not get pregnant, etc... I know in order to regulate me after pregnancy, I went on a low dose birth control pill because I was very irradic. The doctors always said, that it was normal to change drastically after a birth. My cycle changed after each pregnancy. I had three successful. If you worry and are tense about it though, you could be hampering your body by that. So relax. Unless something appears wrong - and not having a cycle is not so abnormal - do not fear. Best wishes and God Bless You!

No need to worry. Your body is just trying to rebalance!

Two periods in two years is not unheard of... it has been the standard for me, my sister and one of my best friends. (We were are all in late 20s at the time.)

A word of encouragement (or, perhaps, warning)... ALL of us got pregnant again within 10 months of having our first baby... with only one "kinda spotty" period a few months before.

Don't worry about running more tests. You are fine. Just relax and enjoy your new little bundle of love/demands/smiles/etc.

Hey! My mom's name is Twyla B!
You are YOUNG and I wouldn't worry about that period! Having a baby does a number on your body and in my experience, many people have a messed up menstrual cycle for a bit. I have a friend who has 2 kids and NEVER had a normal period! Negative tests for what? Try those ovulation predictors when you DO get a period. Good luck!

T.,
Firstly, I need to point out that just because you are not insured does not mean that you can't go see a doctor. Insurance companies have it so ingrained in us that we NEED insurance for simple Dr's visits. Insurance really benefits people for catastrophes, like Cancer, etc. You certainly CAN go to a Dr and pay cash. It's probably less than what a month or two of insurance premiums would be. Please get medical attention if you feel you need it. Don't suffer b/c you THINK you need insurance to see a Dr. It's simply not true.
Your periods can be erratic after giving birth. Are you exercising too much? That can stop your periods also. I would make an appt. to see an OB/GYN and pay cash for the visit. It will allay your fears.
Good Luck!
D.

I do not want to tell you not to worry about, it but first you need to ask yourself, how regular is your menstrual cycle?

I have two precious little angels and a very irregular period. I sometimes don't get a period for months, but I was told that it is not that uncommon since I have constantly been irregular. Are you underweight? There are all different possibilites, but there are a lot of woman like us out there.

I wish you the best of luck, and just wanted to tell you that you might just have irregular cycles, but I am not in the medical field and you should probably seek medical advice when you can.

By the way there are free clinics that you can look into, check your phonebook or google it.

Hi T.,

Try looking into Natural Family Planning, the Billings method. The main thing you learn is how to see what's going on with your body through watching your signs yourself. You don't need to have a regular cycle, it isn't a whole ton of work (you don't need to take your temperature or any of that stuff), and with the help of your teacher can help determine if something might be wrong or if you're just having the normal irregularity that comes with having your little one!

Once learning so much about your own body, you can also use the Billings method to actively try to achieve or postpone pregnancy without using anything else, but for starters it sounds like you just need a way to learn more about your body yourself. Take it into your own hands! (This is the sole method of achieving/postponing my husband and I use, as well as his parents. It has worked flawlessly...2 1/2 no baby and then we got pregnant on the 2nd cycle!)

Also, my mother-in-law is an NFP teacher, I would gladly put you in contact with her.

Good luck!

Hi T. B. I'm 30 years old with a beautiful 10 month old daughter. I actually had the same experience. Mine took forever to come back and I did go see a doctor about it and he said that some woman take longer because our hormones are out of whack. At the time I was still breast feeding but not as much. The first time it came back my daughter was 6 months old and then it went away again. When I went to the doctor he said that I could jump start the process by taking birth control pills or I could let mother nature take its course. After waiting two additional months I decided to take a low dose birth control pill and that worked. Since you are currently uninsured you can go to planned parenthood to get a prescription. Hope everything works out.

I wouldn't worry. It takes a long time for the body to get back to normal. I did not start having regular periods until I returned to using the pill.

This happened to me after I had my first baby. I too was scared about fertility. My OB had to refer me to a fertility specialist and it turned out to be my pituitary gland. She said it is very common and can be curred with medicine. I have since had another baby. Good Luck!
