having 2 kids of my own, you'd think i'd know what to get a family who has just welcomed #3 but i am at a loss. any tips as to what to get them? what did you get that the whole family could enjoy? obviously they've got all the baby gear already. we live 3 hours away from them so i'm not close enough for babysitting or dinner delivery. thanks!

Diapers and gift cards are great!
We did not have to buy diapers for almost 4 months and that was the best gift ever. Gift cards are also great because you always need something with a new baby.

I've sent either a cookie basket or an edible arrangement. It's fun for the older kids and nice for the parents.

Nicole - How about making them dinner?!? Taking the older kids and watching them for a day? Helping get laundry done? Doing the grocery shopping?
Or, if you want to give a gift...(I dind't look to see where you are from..) maybe a family gift membership to your local children's museum? zoo? things the older kids can enjoy? Movie passes?
Diapers are always welcome (but maybe size 1 or 2 since kids are out of newborn pretty quick), shampoo, diaper rash cream, lotion, nursing pads (if she is nursing).
But for me personally....the first couple of suggestions would help the most! You know she is tired and doesn't want to think about laundry and dinner!

When I had my third child, the things I appreciated most were diapers, wipes and gift cards. You can even put together a gift basket full of jars of baby food. Basically anything "consumable" is helpful....even baby shampoo, lotion, etc.

I like to do a "Pampers for Baby"/ "Pampers for Mommy" gift.

For welcoming a second or third child, diapers are a great gift. Diapers are consumable and you can never have too many of those- I get a package of diapers and wipes and then a storybook, teether and/ or special toy for the baby.
For mom I get a bubble bath or bath salts, a good book and a chocolate treat-
if you would like to give something for the family, do a movie night bucket- popcorn, movie candy and a DVD that the family will enjoy in a bucket or
offer to make a meal and dessert and bring it over- this will be a great help to the new mom and enjoyable for the rest ofthe family.
give the older kids movie tickets and offer to take them so that the older kids get a special treat and mom and dad can have some Q. time with the new baby (or rest time while the baby sleeps during the day)

Something personalized with new babies name on it or maybe a savings bond? My favorite gifts were always ones the whole fam could enjoy - memberships to children's museums,etc...

Diapers are always good, or something homemade, like blanket, that will be special to just that baby.
