Weight Loss - Summer vs Winter

Is anyone else like me and find that it is easier to lose weight in the winter than in the summer? In the summer I look at food and put on weight. In winter I can eat the food and still lose. I've heard you burn more calories in the winter, I suppose because it takes calories to maintain your body temperature. I'd love to have better success in the summer when I'm not wearing 3 layers that hide the loss. Does anyone have this problem and have you figured out how to counter it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I do watch what I eat but I find I can cheat in the winter and lose weight. In the summer I can follow a diet to the 'T' and not lose. I don't have much to lose which could factor in, but it would be nice to be rewarded for the effort I put forth.

it's exactly the opposite for me. in summer i'm very active, and there is all that gorgeous fresh produce around. in winter i'm slow and pensive, and want breads and stews and twice-baked potatoes.

Actually studies have found just the opposite: as mammals, even though we don't hibernate, we tend to hoard or store calories more in the winter than we do in the summer. This is mostly due to a potential slowdown in metabolism related to the amount of sunlight seen during the day and how it affects melatonin production. The brain slowly releases melatonin throughout the day, but takes its cues from the amount of light. Less light during the day means that more melatonin is released, resulting in feeling sleepier sooner and perhaps a lowered metabolism.

hee, I'm the opposite. I tend to hibernate during the winter, but during the summer I'm out taking walks, chasing the kiddo and dog at the park, etc.

I think in summer you're puffy from being hot too, especially in humidity, not to mention it's so bright out there's no hiding and the light bright clothing colors and bare pudgy flesh eek. I love my dark long sleeve shirts, and I agree I feel way slimmer in winter. I've been shocked lately while putting away too many carbs while feeling hungry and not exercising enough, somehow I'm not gaining. In summer, one wrong move and I'm all puffed up and working for weeks to beat the bloat.

You just need to eat right and exercise all year long, through all seasons. You could say it is easy to lose weight in the summer b/c you are sweating due to the heat (at least that's how it is in Texas, our summers are so hot). Just don't focus on the season - focus on self control over food throughout the year. Join Weight Watchers if you need to, where you will count points. Exercise every day or almost every day. Eat right (limit your sugar), eat plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grains and protein. Good luck!

I think there are seasonal differences in metabolism which probably can vary from one person to the next. I tend to have more trouble in the winter than the summer - I always say my body is trying to hang on to the insulation. But there are seasonal differences in blood pressure so it would make sense that there could be seasonal differences in metabolism. On the other hand, I can't help you with how to better present a slimmer you under 3 layers of warmth when you're in Pittsburg - you'll just have to unveil the new you in the spring!

I am exactly the same way. I tend to actually be more active in the summer but for some reason, I always either am unable to lose anything if I diet -the same diet I do in the winter and lose weight- or I will actually gain some weight. I have always been baffled by this considering most people I know are the total opposite!

well I'm the opposite of you. I always drop more weight in the summer. I think because for one I'm in less clothing so I want to be thin (cause I can't layer to hind anything) and also I'm more active and out side way more burning more calories. I also think being in the sun helps. The warmth of the sun has vitamins in it and that can help release endorphins which put me in a better a mood and then I don't feel like eating as much. But that's interesting that you are the opposite.

Hi, B. D.

To do any kind of change you need to make a plan but first you need
to be aware of what it is you want to accomplish. What are your values.
Then you go through stages of change:
Precomtemplation: No awareness or in denial
Contemplation: Sound like the stage you are in.
Preparation; When putting down on paper how you are going to make the change.
Action: When you do the things you prepared to do.
Maintainence;. Make any adjustments you need to continue your plan
Termination : when you accomplish your goal.

Dr. phil has a 17 day diet that he is promoting. That might be something to incorporate in your planning phase.
Good luck.
