ive asked two questions regarding weight loss.. when i posted those i wasnt feeling anything.. its just plain weight loss.. last week i started feeling palpitations and tremors.. even at rest.. i had my blood checked and my thyroid hormones are shooting up.. saturday i went to the endocrinologist and its confirmed i have hyperthyroidism but we are no sure yet according to the doctor if its post partum thyroiditis or my dormant thyroid has been active... i was so stressed out these past few months maybe that triggered my thyroid glands to be active.. im on PTU now doctor said its safe for breastfeeding but i choose to feed my little gremlin with formula... has anyone here had thryoiditis?

sad... ;(

What can I do next?

I was diagnosed with hashimoto's thyroiditis when i was a couple weeks pregnant. My thyroid shut down more and more as the pregnancy progressed, now my little guy is 4 months and my thyroid is becoming more active. I'm taking synthroid while nursing (with OB and endocrinologist's approval) and my labs get checked every 1-2 months. Last month my TSH was untraceable and my T4 was super high. We lowered my dosage and I get it tested again in a few weeks. If it's not PP thyroiditis, then you will get used to your body and know when something is up. It's a hassle, but frequent testing and monitoring should make nursing safe whether you have too much or too little!

I have post partum thyroiditis. A few months after my son was born my thyroid went hyper and it lasted a few months then it went hypo and I'm still there. I see an endocrinologist and am monitored closely. I am really tired most afternoons and I am about 5 pounds over my normal weight. I think my fatigue is because I have a 21 month old and a 3 1/2 year old and work 4 days a week. I also have no time to exercise. I'm trying to fit it in because I'm sure it would help. Now that I'm on medication my labs are all normal but I'm still tired at times. Good luck

I wish you luck in finding out the root of your thyroid imbalance. No, I haven't suffered from this, but I've known several people with thyroid issues. The one person I knew who had an overactive thyroid actually was pretty stout, definitely not inclined towards weight gain. Have you condsidered if the stress you refer to is actually the root of your weight loss? Good luck!

I had thyroiditis at least 3 times within 2 years after having my son, but mine went hypothyroid and I would gain weight. We monitored it closely, the acute episodes lasted only about a month for me and over the past 2 years everything has finally gone back to normal.

Don't be too worry about that. I had Grave's disease for years. It went into remission only recently. I took PTU throughout my first pregnancy, 5 years ago, and the thyroid was in excellent shape until a few weeks after delivery when I had a resurgence of Grave's and thyroiditis together. I went back on PTU and never stopped nursing my daughter. In fact, I nursed her for 15 months and kept taking PTU the whole time. Grave's went into remission when she was about 3 and 1/2. That's when I stopped taking PTU. She is now 5, very healthy and very bright. I am 36 weeks pregnant and all is fine. I have high chances to become sick again after delivery, but now I know that, if I want, I can nurse the baby. Good luck to you! It will last a few weeks, if not months, but eventually you'll be fine.
