Waking up During the Night..

My daughter is 20 months and is usually a great sleeper. She gets 2-2 hour naps a day and she sleeps from about 8 am to 7 am...6:15 am during work days (4 days a week). For a LONG time, she has slept through the whole night with not waking--over a year now. For the past week or so, she has been waking up like 2-3 times per night. She hasn't seemed to be able to settle down on her own. I try to stay as quiet as possible, go in and cover her up and she goes right back to sleep. I have always made it a point not to turn on the light, pick her up, or talk to her at this time because it is really "sleepy" time. Last night, she actually asked me for a drink at 4:30 a.m. which is truely unusual. Is this just a phase she is going through? Does anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi B.,

I'm thinking teeth or even a growth spurt if she is eating more than usual. It is a phase. She will grow out of this.

She may be starting to get her 2-yr molars. Does she have any other symptoms? Or maybe she is ready to go to one nap a day. I don't have any great suggestions, as my son is 2 1/2 and still doesn't sleep through the night most nights.

B., my twins did the same thing, used to sleep from 11 am till 2 pm for a nap and then 7 pm till 7am at night, they are now sleeping from 2 till 3:30 pm for a nap and wake up in the middle of the night and come in my room and I put them back in their bed. my twins will be 3 in Dec, Hopefully it is just a stage she is going thru and will get back to her routine soon.

It could be all the things the other posters mentioned but I think she just doesn't need that much sleep anymore. That's a LOT of sleep for a 20 month old. The average is 13 total hours including night and nap(s). I would try to transition to one nap midday, I started with 11am as my daughter was SO tired and wanted to nap early, but now after 3 months at 11am she wanted it later (was harder to get down) so it's now 12pm, right after lunch.
