My son has had a fairly high temp 103 or so with EVERY vaccine! His last 'cocktail" was at 8 months (his 6month vacs late) and since then he has received Pneumoccal and Hib individually and still got a 3 day temp with each of them of about 103. I am trying to determine if he is reacting to the virus's or a component of the vaccine and am wondering if anyone else has a child that responded this way and what their doc said about it. Thanks! I am in communication with my dr. as well.

What can I do next?

My son gets a fever with each round (he's had three), and it tends to be consistently between 100 and 101. We've found better luck with ibuprofin because in addition to bringing that fever down, it seems to help more with muscle soreness and lasts a bit longer than acetominiphen.

My mom said that when my sister was an infant she would get temperatures of 103 every time she got her vaccines. She turned out just fine from the whole thing (in other words the reactions she had to the vaccines didn't impact her overall). I know they have differnt versions of some vaccines. Maybe that would help but I wouldn't be too worried unless your doctor says it is an issue.

my son who is now five, still gets grumpy and runs a fever with shots He had to get 4 to get caught up for kindergarten this year. I just give some form of fever reducer and let him sleep.

My first child got a fever that high the night of the shots or the next day. It only happened 3 times or so and think it was due to a certain shot and it's a common reaction. It's hard to know if it's the shot or sickness. The fever should only last about two days but maybe your child responds differently or maybe it's a combination of viral and the shots. I dosed with Tylenol and now have learned to dose right before an appt. to try to prevent such reactions.

If he has that high a fever because he is reacting to the killed virus and viral pieces.. he should also be producing quite a few antibodies. You could ask your doctor about a blood titer to check antibody levels which approximate immunity. If the levels are high enough he might not need another vaccine... but if he doesn't recieve the full series, he should be checked periodically for continued immunity. They have researched the number of vaccines that it takes to establish life long immunity, that's why they need so many with the safer vaccines.
