6 Month Shots

Hello, I have a question my daughter had her 6 month shots yesterday and she has never had any problems with other shots. Well this time I'm not sure if it is the shots or something else going on. She has been running a fever 102, screaming, not sleeping, and not really wanting a bottle. This started late yesterday afternoon. Then this morning I took her temp it was 101.9 so I was going to give her tylenol and she threw up all over. Is it possible for her to fine with all other shots and then have problems? Never experienced this with my other 3 kids. Look forward to hearing from others. Thanks

yes, it's normal for her to have this reaction. Depending on what kind of a shot she got, since it contains a little bit of the virus it is supposed to protect from, sometimes babies get fever and can get a little sick after the vaccine. It happened to my daughter around the same age (maybe earlier) and I just started bringing tylenol with me to the doc. so I give her a little bit at the time of the shots to prevent fever later.
just keep trying to give her tylenol to bring the fever down if she can hold it down. more importantly, keep her hydrated, she will get over it in a day or two.
good luck!

Hi T.
Sorry she is not feeling well.
My advice is to call the MD.
Cool her down with a cool cloth, because you don't want fever any higher.

Hi T., yes it is possible. Although the shots are the same, each immunization gives her more of the virus in the shot. When you gave her the first set of shots, her immune system could have become compromised so that by the time she received the subsequent shots, she is getting an overload. Instead of following the traditional schedule, why don't you follow Dr. Sears' safer schedule to allow more time in between shots. You mentioned that your other children had no issues with their shots, please remember that each body is different, which is referred to as bio-individuality. Therefore the shots might not have hurt your other children, however, they could be very harmful to you daughter. Dr. Sears book is an excellent book that I highly recommend for moms who are going to immunize their children. The title is "The Vaccine Book," which is the best material I have ever read regarding vaccines (I have read many things on this topic :). Continue to watch her, but I WOULD NOT give her the next scheduled round of shots (regardless of what your doctor says). If your doctor objects, you can find a Dr. Sears friendly doctor on his website. The link is as follows: http://www.askdrsears.com/thevaccinebook/Vaccine_Friendly...

Good luck

T.,

It may be a reaction to the shots even though your child didn't have it before. Perhaps there was a different one this time or a different combination?
I would recommend checking out Dr. Sherry Tenpenney, DO websit. She is a vaccine expert and has information on remedies to consider giving your child following shots.
My son experienced the same after he had his first 2 shots at 4 months. After that I did not want him to have anymore shots and researched them and I will choose a religious exemption.
In NYC is a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Sarah Cimperman who you may want to see as she has nutritional and homeopathic remedies which may help.

Hi, i just saw your post. My daughter recived her 4 months shots last afternoon, and ran a temprature as well of around 102. She puked once but i think it was because she did not like the tylenol. Her fontanel is bluging slightly though and thats my worry for the day. I am taking her to the doctor this afternoon. Have you experienced anything like this ?

T.,
Your description definitely sounds like a reaction to the shots. Call the peds office and make sure to request the lot number of the batch given to her. The website to report adverse reactions is vaers.hhs.gov
As advised earlier, if you choose to give shots after this, it would be best to give them one at a time and spread them out.
I personally do not vaccinate my children and would be glad to share that with you in a private message if you were interested.
Watch her closely and good luck.

yes it is possible. throwing up kinda unusual though. if you continue to innoculate, why don't you have the dr. get the shots separated so that you know which one, if any is giving your daughter a reaction.
see if you're other kids or you come down with something also in the next couple of days, that will be an indicator as well if it is the vaccines or a virus.
either way, i'd get in touch with the dr. immediately.

One of mine was the same as your.

Some shots will give a fever. My pediatrician usually told me after issuing such a shot to give her baby tylenol when I got home. Please call your pediatrician about the fever. 101.9 taken with a rectal thermometer is not a low grade fever. If she is throwing up more than once, give her some pedialyte as well to restore her electrolyte and potassium levels (ask your dr first though).

Hi T.!

My son did well with his shots early on, but as he grew, he started to get fevers, fatigue, etc.. The doctor said that he was developing antibodies and now his body was fighting off the vaccine by developing a fever--all normal. This may have happened with your daughter. I think the vomiting was just a fluke thing--maybe the taste or just that she wasn't feeling well to begin with. I suggest only getting 1-2 shots at a time to minimize the reactions. Every child is different.

I would call your pediatrician right away and let them know - just for tracking of reactions and b/c they might want to just check her out too. Your daughters immune system is working hard right now she might have just gotten something that she otherwise would have been able to fight off if she wasn't already fighting the shots. I always felt like there was never a real answer - but keep her dr informed and keep a close eye on her to be safe! She could have picked something up in the dr's office, it could be a reaction, it could be a coincidence who REALLY knows - just call your dr!

T.- I would be very concerned, it sounds like your daughter had an adverse reaction to the vaccines that were administered to her. As with any other medical procedure, there are possible side-effects that can occur with any vaccination & if she was given more than one @ a time, it is impossible to assess which one negaitvely affected her. You may want to make note of which vaccinations she received and discuss alternative options with your dr (perhaps spread these vaccines out, one @ a time) & ask to read the vaccine package inserts for each vaccines you allow the ped to administer to your child, there are risks involved and you should be informed of these risks each time you are asked to sign to have your child be given a vaccine. You can report her adverse reaction to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) at 1-800-822-7967 or online at www.vaers.hhs.gov/vaers.htm#5

Also, here is a check list of adverse vaccine reactions: http://www.dienviro.com/index1.aspx?BD=18841

Did she get any shots this time that she didn't before? If so make sure you let your doctor know. When my daughter was 6 months they gave her the flu shot. She broke out in full body hives and we nick named her "Cheeta Girl". The flu shot was the only difference and I know it is what made her sick. Keep a log of what she had and her reaction. Some children get "sick" after shots but it could also be a reaction. A.

This is not a typical reaction to shots. I would be on the phone calling my doctor. This reaction needs to be documented. It could be an allergic reaction to something in the shot. Next, do some research. There is no need for our kids to have some many shots at one time. My kids have never received more then 2 shots at one visit. Some receive a cocktail called pediarix (or something like it) that has as many as 5 things in it. That is way to many things to receive at one time. I was very careful when I had my kids. I know someone personally who's child got sick after his shots and my doctor told me there was a child in their practice who had seizures after receiving theirs. Yes, vaccine's are good. They save lives too. But they are dangerous. Do some reading. You have 3 mos before she is to receive her next round. Remember, they can not give any shots you don't agree to or sign for. It's best to educate yourself. You may have your eyes opened.

Hi T.,
After 4 children, I can't say that I recall any problems like this with shots. I have been told to expect issues like this, and it was suggested to give tylenol before shots were given, to help avoid the fever and such. You should contact your pediatrician to let them know what is going on this time, and maybe then they can advise you for the next time you go in for shots.

I wouldn't worry about the vomiting much. My son, 8 years old, vomits every time his temp goes above 101*. I think its his body's way to reject the fever. Try to give tylenol right after vomiting, she may be able to keep it down better. You do need to get control over the fever.

I have to keep an eye on him every time he gets a runny nose or a cough. I give him tylenol, or something for runny nose/cough, put him into a hot shower, as hot as he can take it (and he likes it hot)as long as 15 - 20 minutes, and give him soup for dinner or something heavier if he wants, then send him to bed shortly after. Just to try to avoid the oncoming fever. He usually wakes up with no symptoms in the morning.

Also, I'm sure you will here this from many other moms, give her Pedialyte. My kids didn't like it, so I bought the Ice pops. If you get them, freeze it and give her small bites for the fever. Give her lots of fluids, not milk or formula. Gerber baby juices, mix with water, just use the juice for taste.

Dont forget the cool bath/wash cloth to bring down the fever more naturally than tylenol.

Try to make her as comfortable as she wants to be, including sitting with you, or you holding her as much as she wants to be held, until she feels better. But remember to put her down when you can. And keep off the heavy blankets, unless you have the air conditioning on.
Good luck

Every shot has a different set of possible side effects, and fever is common with a lot of them. If your ped didn't give you an information sheet on the shots, request one, and make sure you get one for the rest of the shots she'll get. Also, if tylenol isn't bringing your daughter's fever down, call the dr for that too. Best wishes, hopefully she'll feel better soon.
