Unique Birthday Cakes

Okay, my son is turning 16 next week. I was having a friend scan a picture of my son and then use photoshop to download a hummer (which he loves) and put his face in the car and then have a set of car keys next to it and take it to BJ's and have them put the picture on the cake. Well that all fell through so I am really looking for good ideas, bakeries, etc. for my son's cake. I don't necessarily want to spend oodles of money but I want something different/a little unique for his 16th birthday. Doesn't have to have his picture of it.

Thanks for any input you can give!!

What can I do next?

I don't think we live in the same area so I can't suggest a bakery, but if you are still looking to do the scanned photo maybe check with a local grocery store.

How about decorating the cake to resemble a drivers license? You could put a photo of him in the corner.

If you think he would have a sense of humor about it, get one of those kids toys that resembles a mini dashboard with a steering wheel, gear shifter, etc. Place cupcakes all around it. Maybe give him a "present" of toy keys before he sees the cake. Then show him what the keys go to (the cake). hee-hee!

How about putting matchbox-type Hummers on top of the cake? If it is a bigger size you could put a pic of him in the window.

Have a great party!

A lot of supermarket bakeries will put a photo on a cake, so if you design the cake the way you want, then take a photo of it, they can skan it on top.

In what area do you live? There is a bakery near us that can do anything, but it may not come cheaply. There also is a mom in our area who bakes the most delicious and amazing looking cakes. She does it for fun from home, without advertising. But you could be far. Please send me a private message if you are interested!

Is it possible for you to visit www.wilton.com and find a design there that you could make for your son yourself? I make all of my childrens cakes and if I can do it, anyone can! Your daughter may even enjoy helping with it. Good luck to you!

I worked at a bakery after high school for a little while. This was 10 years ago! But.... It was in the York, Pa area if you are close?

Anyway, most bakeries have the ability to make these "edible images" is what you are talking about. If you can find a picture that you like of a Hummer, and a Picture of your son... they could probably make one for you.

We would even sell just the image itself, for 10 bucks back then. And the people would take them home and put them on their own cakes. Or else they can do the cake as well for you.

They could drawl keys on the cake. They could do the edible image of his car or a picture of him. Just depends on what you decide you want to go with. Just to warn you, some places cannot reproduce copyrighted things. Just by law you are not allowed to. So if you have a picture of your Hummer that you owned, that might work. But if you print out something off of the Hummer website they not legally be able to reproduce it, if they were caught they could be fined. It all just depends.

I made a cake for my brother when he turned 16. He was big into football so I had this really cool picture of him in his gear drinking from a water bottle. (Almost like a sprite commercial or something! lol) And I made it into an edible image, put it on the cake, and decorated with footballs and his school colors and stuff for the writing and borders and things. He really liked it. It wasn't car related, but he wasn't into getting his license right away.

If you could get a picture of him as a toddler on his bike or old power wheels car or something, and then a "now" picture of him practicing in your car, or cut out a picture of his head and stick it in the hummer... they might be able to lay it all together and make one image from it all. That would be cute. A then and now sort of theme. The picture of him with the Hummer might be a little goofy, but thats ok b/c its the whole idea, you know?

Good luck! Hope you work something out.

Hi B.. I'm not sure how far you live from Delaware, but there's a Bakery on Kirkwood Highway that can do custom cakes with photos, etc. Here's the link:

What about an iPod cake-i've seen a few pics on line. It looks pretty easy to do and is suitable for his age.
