Undescended Testes

My son's pediatrician told us at his last checkup (6 months) that he either has an undescended testes or only one testes. He refferred us to a urologist. I have yet to make the appointment but I was wondering what I should expect. What will they do at the appointment? Has anyone had a son have surgery to bring down a testicle?

What can I do next?

Our pediatrician also thought that our son had undescended testes (actually she thought just one hadn't descended) and referred us to a urologist. We went to our appointment (with Dr. Alibody sp? at Park Nicollet - he is a pediatric urologist and was amazing - I also saw later that he was voted 'best pediatric urologist in Mpls/St Paul) Anyway, it turned out that our son just has hypersensitive testes and he is fine - as he grows it will resolve itself. Good luck!!

Hi K.!

My son, too, had an undescended testicle. At his 2 year appt it was discovered and we consulted with a urologist (Dr Ali Abadi) and did the surgery at Children's West. The urologist will feel around his abdomen and try to work the testicle down to see if it springs back up right away or if it's "hyperactive" and goes up and down frequently. Prior to surgery we did not know if he had just one undescended or both but it ended up just being the one side. They did a small incision on his testicle sack and go in with what they describe as a small crochet hook to get ahold of it and bring it down. He also had a small incision on his abdomen. His testicle was bruised for a bit, but other than that, nothing major. It didn't affect his behavior at all, he was himself the minute we got home which was hard because as you can imagine at 2 years old was quite active!

We really liked Dr. Ali Abadi and Children's West. He was the consulting urologist at Park Nicollet in St Louis Park and we liked him and also had a friend whose daughter saw him for urology and they liked him, too.

Hope all goes well!
M.

Hi K.,
I am a bit surprised that this was not detected in his physical at birth. Our son is 4 now, but was born with one testicle and had surgery at 7 mo. to bring the other down. He has both and all seems well. At 3 days old we took him to a urologist who carefully tried to manipulate the other down, but this proved to be unsuccessful. It was kind of like he tried to massage it down, but we later learned (from a different and better Dr.) that surgery is preferrable b/c they can put a stitch in to make sure the testicle does not go back up the way it came down. It is my understanding that they used to way until they were around 7 yrs. old before they would perform surgery, but the new train of thought is to do it before their 1st bday. Surgery was no big deal. Quick and on a outpatient basis. He was given tylenol with codeine that I believe we only gave to him once or twice b/c after a long nap he was back to normal. This whole surgery thing sounds scary, but apparently it is fairly routine from the urologist perspective. Best of luck to your son and let me know if I can answer any questions.

Our doctor detected our son's in infancy but we waited to see if it would come down on it's own. It didn't so he had the surgery (I think around 2 yrs. old). He's fine now, potty trained fine, will be able to have children :). All the things we moms worry about, right? It was a very easy surgery/recovery. We had Dr. Vandersteen from Pediatric Urology (by Children's Hospital). He's a wonderful doctor. We've also used Dr. Rich from Pediatric Surgical Associates (my sister-in-law used him for a surgery too). He is very good too but I don't know if he does this kind of surgery. My son had an umbilical hernia too. Good luck.
