Trying to Help a Friend...

Super long story short, my friend lives out of state and is going through a disgusting, ugly divorce. I know she's an adult and is strong enough to get through this, I just worry about her kiddos, all 4 of whom I love as if they were my own.

She moved into her own place... he took the twins (who are too young to understand) and she won't get them back until court at the end of the month (and she WILL get them back)... but that's neither here nor there.

She is living with her 2 daughters from a previous relationship (but both of whom call her almost-ex 'dad'), and they're all having a really hard time without their baby brothers around.

He also has most of their furniture and personal possessions (until court). They're not allowed to be in any contact with each other.

MY POINT IS, I want to do something for the girls to put a smile on their faces, give them something of their own. I don't have a lot of money either (actually, NONE as of right this second, ugh)... but I was looking on amazon and found some music posters that I know they'd love (Green Day and Taylor Swift)... would this be a good gift? They're within my nonexistant budget... I was thinking it would be something they could hang in their rooms, something that they like and expresses who they are, etc.

Would this be a good gift or is that silly?

I just want to send a little 'happy' (like my MIL says)... just something to put a smile back on their pretty little faces!! I feel so bad for them, they're just kids and didn't ask for their family to be divided... is that an okay gift? The girls are 8 (Taylor Swift) and 10 (Green Day) ... ;)

What can I do next?

I think that's awesome! Do they like to read? You might also try www.half.com for some books. They are super cheap.

You are a good friend to think of them like this.

Another thing maybe...little small bottles of nail polish or lip glosses?

The posters are a fabulous idea! Just brainstorming on little, not expensive gifts as I type. :)

I am pretty sure my almost 9 year old daughter would dig that - especially since she put posters for her wall on her birthday list!! : ) Follow your gut, you know them best!

Yes, I think that would be a great gift. My daughter always loved posters of her fav stars on her walls.

Taylor Swift for sure, but Green Day? Are kids into them these days? I haven't heard anything from or about them for a while. Just make sure the posters are of stars or musicians they love.

Most young girls love the hottie from Twilight. Not the vampire, the other one. What's his name? Oh yeah, Taylor Lautner. Unless they are too young for his abs and pecs on their wall.

Get the kids sizes, and go to the thrift store. Pick out some outfits for them. Go buy them a few hair accessories, etc. Go to the used book/music store near you and pick up some books & CDs or movies for them. Buy something small but nice for the mom, and a notecard telling them you're thinking of them. Pack it in a box and mail it. :)

one other idea: make a quickie scrapbook/journal for each girl. You can put it together easily using odds/ends, leftovers....& it will encourage the girls to look within themselves during this stressful period. Use lots of inspirational/uplifting tags & it will help them!

With my daycare, today I have one of the older sisters.....a one time event. Anyway, she's 8 & I gave her cardstock, a binder ring (or you can use yarn/ribbon), a book of stickers, & markers. She is making an autograph/memory book to share with her friends at recess when she returns to school this Thursday. She's so excited ....& it's all leftovers!

Hope this helps.....
