Music for a 12 Year Old Girl?

My 12 year old niece is having a surprise party. I asked my SIL what I should get. She suggested music that is appropriate for a 12 year old.

Well, I don't know what that would be. It seems that a lot of my son's friends are into Hanna Montana and they are 4 and 5. What are preteens listening to?

Help!

What can I do next?

You could get her the "Twilight" soundtrack. I have it (yes, I'm a huge Twilight fan! LoL) and the music is great no matter what the age group =)

It looks like you've gotten a lot different types of music already. I agree with a couple people that choosing music, for anyone not just a 12 year old, is diffucult if your not sure they type of music they are into. I am a girl scout leader for girls 10-12 and I can tell you the range of music they listen to is huge. Some are VERY into the Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers type while others REFUSE to listen to it :-)
I would talk to your sil to see what style of music your niece is in. If she can't give you any ideas I would suggest just getting her a giftcard. If you don't like the idea of just a giftcard, maybe you can take her to lunch or a girls day out and stop by a music store to pick up her cd. This will not only give her a gift but also some special time with her aunt. :)

I LOVE the idea of buying her an i-tunes card and helping her download individual songs to make her own CD. (If she has an i-pod or older siblings with one, she may know how to do this herself.)

Another idea might be a soundtrack to a favorite movie/show. My daughter's (ages 12 & 13) like to listen to the Hairspray and Mama Mia sound tracks. They also love the Wicked soundtrack. Also, You've Got Mail is one of our favorite movies and they have the music for that, too.

I have a 12 year old daughter who loves music. She enjoys the Jonas Brothers, Jason Mraz, Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus - Miley Cyrus has separate CDs from Hannah Montana. Miley music is a little edgier than Hannah. If she's into American Idol, David Cook or David Archuleta are good choices.

My twin daughters are 13 and would rather die than listen to anything by Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, or anything else on the Disney channel. Music is a pretty personal choice, so what I would suggest is either an itunes card (if she has an ipod) or an Amazon gift card (she could order a CD online or buy songs that download onto her computer if she has one) or a gift card to a music store. That way she and your SIL can decide what's appropriate and what isn't.
Have fun!

Music is *SO* subjective. And at 12, what's cool one week is totally lame the next.

I would stay away from Miley, the Jonas Brothers, and so on. They are ubiquitous; she can hear them 100 times/day if she turns on the radio, anyway! Why not take this opportunity to introduce her to some classical or world music, or maybe some of the "cleaner" hits from your own adolescence?

MPR has an online radio station called "Wonderground Radio", and it's tagline is "Music for kids and their grown-ups". It is a rock station, but it plays kid-appropriate stuff. Yes, they do play Rolling Stones and so on, but the songs they play do not have swear words or are overtly sexual. Their website is Wondergroundradio.org. You could just look at their playlist (shown on the website) to get ideas for songs and artists.

If this were my niece, I would make her a personalized CD of songs I chose, going off of the options I've listed above. If you don't have a CD burner, some record stores can make personalized CDs for you (Electric Fetus in Mpls is one) or you could just buy the songs on iTunes and either put them on her iPod or computer.

Have fun w/this!

my 12 yr old cousin likes the jonas brothers, taylor swift and miley cyrus. high school musical and camp rock are very popular too but might be directed to a slightly younger crowd. their music is appropriate because there is no offensive lanquage in the music or any inappropriate messages in the music. good luck on your search! i hope this helps!

My daughter is 12 and I can tell you that she would not want anything from Hanna Montana, (my daughter won't). She likes the "Now" CDs, you can find them at wal-mart, they are all numbered. She also likes the Jonas brothers. My daughter also likes Country, but my sons, two older and one younger then she is, likes pop and rock.
Good luck on finding her something.

My daughter is 11 and has recently started to think Hannah Montana is lame and over-rated, so you might want to think twice about that one.
As others have suggested, I think that Rihanna and Taylor Swift are great choices.
My daughter also likes Duffy, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Fergie, the song "Paralyzer" by Finger 11, Katy Perry (one of her faves), Sean Paul, the Ting Tings. Good luck, hope it turns out wonderfully.
If you can find a Now That's What I Call Music CD that has a combination of some of these I think you'd be in good shape.

I asked my 12 yr old son... this is what he said...

depends if she is a girly girl then she would like Flo Rida (pop music) or else alot of girls in his class like Rihanna she sings "umbrella", Jonas Brothers and the Cheeta Girls. He said a sure one would be Taylor Swift. She is country/pop, she is more geared for teens/ preteens. Jonas Brothers and Cheeta Girls are both on the Disney Channel so they would be good. I have never heard anything by Flo Rida or Rihanna so I couldn't tell you what they are like for sure.

Good luck, I'm sure more mom's will have some other good ones that we aren't thinking of right off the top of our heads!

You could buy her an I-tunes gift card and download the program on your computer for free. Then you pick up a pack of blank cds. she can come over and pick out all her favorite songs and spend time with you. Once she has picked them all out you just burn the songs to the blank cd and if she ever loses or breaks the cd they are all saved on your itunes account and can be re burned anytime.
It is really easy to do. I just made some fun cds for our kids for christmas on there. You don't have to have an ipod to use itunes either.

Hi diana,
it really doesn't make any difference how old they are, the answer seems to be hanna montana. She would probably be really pleased. Rosie
