Cleaning baby's gums with a washcloth is a good habit to get into, but once or twice a day is probably sufficient. Once in the morning and once at night to get into the routine you will use for brushing teeth. After each feeding is a little much.

A washcloth. They also have these little brush things, you can put over your finger. I saw them at Babies R Us. It's really important to take care of their gums, even before teeth erupt.

Thanks eveyone for your opinions! I have to take communicable diaease classes for my job and i was told to do it even before the first tooth especially if the baby goes straight to bed after having a bottle/breastfed or is sent to bed with a bottle because the sugary substance will be just sit in their mouth causing acid to eat at enamel even before their first tooth comes in...i was curious as to what other moms thought! And sorry with the confusion about his age...he is 7 weeks when i said one month i was talking in general since he wasnt exactly two montha yet lol my bad!

I never did that. I didn't start brushing until my kids had teeth.

It's great to get baby used to this. Helps prevent fussing when it's time to start brushing. It also helps prevent oral defensiveness. And yes, it helps prevent tooth decay. Using a soft washcloth around your fingers is relatively easy.

Good Lord NO!

They don't even have teeth yet.

If they have bad enamel DNA there's nothing you can really do until they're older to prevent cavities, they'll have a mouth full. If they get good enamel DNA then they won't have a single cavity even if they never brush their teeth or even swish food out.

I took one of my guys to almost every dentist in town. His father wanted a dentist to tell him he needed to brush his teeth every day in the morning and in the evening. Not one dentist would tell him that. They each said they had never seen such perfect enamel. SO the dad kept getting mad and still sent the man to more and more dentist.

He never had a single cavity in his whole life. He didn't ever pick up a tooth brush.

That's what can happen if good enamel DNA is present. Then there's that kids who brushes, flosses, rinses, goes to the dentist twice a year for cleaning, etc....who has to have fillings every time he sees the dentist.

If you get good DNA you have good teeth, if you get bad you get bad teeth.

So don't worry so much. Look at your teeth and hubby's teeth. Taking good care of the mouth isn't a bad thing but overdoing it won't help one way or the other.

I suggest that it's too early to worry about doing this. Start when your baby gets her first tooth. As others said, it's to get you and baby used to cleaning his teeth. The gums don't need to be cleaned. It's preparation for cleaning teeth.

Little to much to clean after each feeding.Morning and Night will work.Get a wet washcloth and rub it softly on his/her gums.
