Toilet Trouble with My 3-Year-old

My daughter has been potty trained for the better part of a year. She has done awesome with it up until about 2-3 months ago. She started having accidents for no apparent reason. I am home with her all day and she has access to the potty all day. I ask her hourly if she needs to go (a habit I haven't broke from the training stages) and generally she doesn't need to at that time. She seems to know the cues to listen for within her own body and will take herself when she needs to.

At first my husband and I thought it was an attention thing because our son, who is older, had been sick for about a week and get the 'extra' attnetion. Even after he recovered though, the accidents continued. They weren't frequent in the beginning, but now its happening 3-6 times a day! And I am ready to put her back in diapers or pull-ups because I'm tired of doing all the extra laundry and following her around with the steam cleaning machine to save my carpet and furniture.

The frequent accidents have put a huge damper in my ability to do anything outside of our home with her because it is very inconvenient to travel with some many changes of clothes in the car, not to mention the disaster we had when she had an accident in the car!

I don't know what to do or try. I'm extremely frustrated and do not understand this one bit! Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

First thing is don't ask her if she needs to go. Just like you don't ask a little one if they need to brush their teeth, you just tell them to go. Tell her "it's time to go potty". If you leave it up to her at this point she's just going to blow it off. This is 4 kids worth of experience talking. Almost all kids regress or get tired and lazy about it so you have to take some of the control back. DO NOT buy pull ups. You're setting yourself and her up for a long trek back to panty land. If you do that you're basically giving her permission to pee in her pants. Take her to the toilet every hour and get on the reward system. No accident's in the morning = special treat, etc.

I can't tell you why she is regressing, but here are some ideas to help make it less stressing. I went to garage sale & bought some clothes cheap to keep packed in the car. I think I spent $5.00 for a week's worth of clothes. I then went & bought puppy pads & a box of gallon zip bags. I put a puppy pad in the car seat to keep it from getting nasty while out & about. I use the bags to put nasty clothes & keep the stink down. Just a few tips to help..... I would definately have her checked medically if it is that many accidents a day though just to make sure nothings out of whack.

This is probably just a regression stage and will pass, as the other post has stated. I agree with them though, to have her checked for a UTI. Also, my 3 yr old daughter always seems to have more accidents prior to becoming sick (common cold, flu, etc). I know that sounds weird, but it almost never fails....Good luck & stay consistent and calm (I know it's frustrating).

I would take her to your ped and rule out urinary track or yeast infection.
