Toddlers Ready for the Movies?

I really want to take my 2.5 year old son, Carlo, to the movies. But, he's 2-and-a-half.

Occasionally, he'll sit and watch Monsters, Inc. at home but, he's a very, very busy little guy. I've told him about the movies and explained the behavior expected but, I don't know if he can handle. I know Loews does the ReelMoms thing where the theater is designated for parents and their kids of all ages but, the closest one that does that is an hour away and they only do it on Tuesday mornings (I work).

Carlo is such a good boy and I love to reward him with very special, new and exciting outings (rather then toys and sweets). When was the earliest you've take your children to the movies?

Or, am I just ridiculous for thinking of trying?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I did it!

First he went to see TMNT a while back. He was more excited about the escalators in the theater. He was pretty frightened at the large screen. He chilled out for a good 30 mins then wanted to get back out to the escalators.

Then, just last week he and I went to see Shrek 3. He did very well up until about the last 15 mins of the movie. I didn't want to argue so we just left.

He wants to see Spiderman but I think I'm gonna hold off on that because its a very grown up storyline. He will get bored way faster than the other 2 movies.

Thanks all!

I think you should just take him and see what happens. He may sit quietly or he may scream his head off through the entire movie, however the more he goes and is exposed to that particular setting, the sooner he'll learn how to behave at the movies. I take my kids all the time...my 2 year old son has learned to sit still ( on my lap anyway) and my 3 year old daughter is ok as long as she has a juice box and a snack. The point is put him in the situation and see how he does. most moviegoers are understanding of an active 2.5 year old.

He is way to young to be expected to sit through a movie in the dark for that long of time. My 4 year old still can't sit that long. I have 5 and have tried it with each one and always land up leaving. I would wait until at least 4 before attempting it

i think you should just wing it and take him . he might surprise you and behave. the whole experience of that huge screen in front of him will be great. my son is 4 and he's been to the movies a whole bunch of times.. you will never know unless you try.

I think you should take him and see what happens. I started bringing my daughter to the movies when she was two and she did really well. Even if he is a little restless or gets up a couple of times, people at children's movies expect this and are very understanding and nice about it. Not only does it give you something new to do together but it is an excellant opportunity to teach appropriate behavior in places like a theater so even if he is a little busy his first visit eventually he will learn how to calm down, sit still and enjoy the show.
