Toddler Reverting to Pooping in Pants! Help Please!

My daughter was completely potty trained for months. She will be three in August. Last week, she had runny stools and had accidents in her pants. This week, she has just been pooping in her pants with no thought of going to the potty. What the heck is going on? Did she just get comfortable with having soiled pants? Is it normal to revert to this kind of behavior? We have gone back through the potty training methods we used with no success. Any suggestions?

So What Happened?

thank you for the responses. I actually tried taking her pants off altogether when we got home and just let her run around with no pants on and lo' and behold, she went poop on the potty! We had a huge celebration and broke out the new play-doh set. Hopefully, she will continue to poop in the potty.

I would speak to the Dr. My daughter went through the same thing. I tried all kinds of methods to try to help her start using the potty again and nothing worked. At one point I finally realized that she couldn't help it. The dr. did an ultrasound and found a blockage which was pressing on her bladder causing involuntary peeing and pooping. We did laxatives for three days (and stayed near a potty!) and then Miralax for several months to help her body get back into a routine. One thing to be aware of, my daughter was going poop in the potty daily when this started, so I had no reason to think she was constipated. She just wasn't going enough to clear out her system.
Hope you guys get through this soon. I know it's tough!

from a parent who is finally have success with her 4 year old in that area believe me i understand your frustration! Our dr. told us she was so constipated and blocked up her rectum was swollen and she actually could not feel the poop coming out. Runny stools can actually be poop leaking around the blockage. Miralax has saved us! (you can buy an off brand cheaper at sams and walmart) i'm glad you had success with no underwear but if it continues to happen i would go see your dr. We plan on staying on miralax for at least 6 months.
at their age their poop is supposed to be the consitancy of oatmeal and she should poop every day.

It seems involuntary.
You might want to take her to the Doctor... to rule out 'constipation' or "encopresis.' These things can't be 'controlled' by the child.

You said her stools were 'runny' as well.

Or, if there are any stresses or changes in her life, this can make a child 'regress.'

all the best,
Susan

Sounds normal compared to my kids. The trials of potty training are oh so stressful. I say keep on keeping on because this too will pass. It is hard to say if she got 'comfortable' or if something else happened. With my youngest we did songs and finger plays while she sat on the potty. Maybe she needs new big girl panties that she hasn't soiled in yet with a promise of something special if she doesn't dirty them. Best of luck

when my husband was 4, he'd been potty trained for a year already, he started pooping his pants after a case of diarreah. My father-in-law asked him "do you want to go back to diapers?" answer "YES!" FIL put him in diapers. MIL said "I'm not changing his diapers. You put him back in diapers, you change him!" FIL took his son into the back yard next poop and HOSED HIM OFF, then asked "Do you want diapers again?" 4-yr old said "NO" and never pooped his pants/diapers again.

Harsh? Maybe. But he was 4 at he time, a whole year older than your daughter. But just my two cents.

My son reverted 3 times. The last time I started giving him a sucker if he pooped on the potty. If he pooped in his pants I got the sucker. He only pooped one time in his pants after that and we haven't had any trouble since.
