Toddler Toddler Beds - Engadine, MI

I have recently put our 22 month old son in a toddler bed. He does really well at night when it is dark, but for naps I have been having to put him in his crib. I don't want to keep doing this because I think it can be confusing to him. I was wondering if any of you have had similar issues and what did you do? I want to take the crib down soon.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well all of the advice was very helpful especially from those who said not to give up and give in. Today's nap went a lot better except for when I checked on him he was sleeping on the floor with the blanket on him... It was cute. Night time still is going very well so far. Thanks again to all the advice.

If he can climb in or out of the crib, then it is time for a toddler bed, for his safety. My son crawled out once at around 18 months and we knew it was time. For naps, he used to come to the door if he couldn't fall asleep. I talked to a girlfriend of mine and she gave me the best advice. I now offer him a small toy and book to take with him and his lovey. He needs to stay in bed or he loses his special things, one at a time. He rarely comes out. I also offer him to 'Just rest a while' and read his books...he will just sit and go through numerous books, and eventually fall asleep.

22 months is pretty young for a toddler bed, why the rush to get rid of the crib? He is still very young, I would just wait on the toddler bed until he is older and keep him in the crib. Babies grow up too fast anyway, no need to rush him into something he's probably not ready for, and its not worth the frustration.

My son has been in a toddler bed since he was 18 months because he was able to crawl out of his crib. What I found helps is keeping a blanket over the window, to shield any light.

our son had the same problem what we did is we rocked him to sleep in our oversized recliner and then once asleep we placed him in his toddler bed. Works like a charm now!!

I would probably just take the crib down. I put my son in a twin bed with a guard rail at 16 months and took down his crib at the same time that I switched him to a bed. As for napping during the day, I would try darkening his room more. Heavy or dark curtains or you could try covering the windows with a blanket to make it darker for him. I hope that this helps!

Over Thanksgiving we converted our daughter's crib into the toddler bed. She will be two in January. We don't have a problem with the naps, when she's tired she will go to her room, shut her door and climb into bed. She is only aloud her pacifer at bedtime so we just set it on her pillow. She knows that it has to stay there. Night time is a little different. I have to keep putting her back into bed. It takes about 3-4 times before she realizes that she has to go to sleep. Maybe he is getting a little older for naps. My daughter loved taking them in the morning and now she is more of an after lunch napper plus she doesn't sleep that long anymore. I would keep putting him in his toddler bed so he doesn't get confused. Good Luck!

Sorry, but I have to disagree with a previous poster. 22 months can be big enough for a bed for some toddlers, depending on size. My daughter could get out of her crib at 19 months. MY advice here, since it sounds like nighttime sleep is going well, is that maybe he is napping too much during the day and is trying to tell you he doesn't need it? My daughter is 20 months and she just gave up her morning nap. or, if you are already down to one, try to keep the room dark, maybe read a book or whatever it is you do for the bedtime routine, and just be consistent in explaining why he needs to stay in bed, rather than giving up(don't mean that to sound harsh, I know it's hard!) and putting him in the crib. Hang in there, he will get used to it, try not to let this become a pattern. Good luck.

Hi... How about trying the out of sight, out of mind trick? for both of my children, we moved the crib to another room when our children were not around to see (and a room they never went in, and tried out the bed for a few days. when we knew they would sleep in the bed after a few days we took the crib down completly. We made the bed be a Big Boy and Big Girl bed to make it more exciting to sleep in. We told them that older cousins slept in big boy bed's...
Also, I do agree he is big enough for a big boy bed... My son moved to one at 22 months, and my daughter at 17 months (had to move the crib into the nursery to get ready for our son to use it... but she adjusted just fine)

Hope that helps

Hi S.
This could go either way, whatever your most comfortable with. My daughter got her big girl bed at 2 years old, and she didn't want to have anything to do with it at night. She only wanted to take naps in it. I too, had to try and get her into the bed to make room for baby number 2. Honestly, she was about 28 months when she got excited about sleeping in it at night. My son is 18 months, and he is content with the crib. Try to make a super big deal about what a big boy he is and make this a big boy privelege. Otherwise, it will happen soon enough, sometimes we just have to wait until their ready.
Good Luck
C.
