Tired After Weaning

Has anyone else experienced fatigue after weaning? I just weaned our fourteenth month old five days ago, and I am finding myself sleepier than usual. I did have unprotected sex twelve days ago but a pregnancy test this morning was negative (with my other three kids, I had faint positives by now, but I will test once more in a few days). I don't remember feeling so tired after weaning the other two, but I am forty now...with three under six and a little one who still isn't sleeping through the night...so it might have nothing to do at all with weaning.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Yes, well, I am not 30 anymore so that is a factor. I just did an online search and it seems that the shift in hormones after weaning can absolutely bring on fatigue. Hopefully it will pass. I should probably start a multivitamin of some sort. Thank you!

You could just have a mild virus.

You're hormones are adjusting too.

And just thinking of 3 muchkins at 40 makes me want to take a nap.

And how's the weaning going? Is the baby sleeping with you / without you / waking others for comfort? And you're attuned to that activity?

Have your thyroid levels checked.
I had a lot more energy once my milk dried up.

I remember being really tired from chasing a toddler. :) I was only 32 when my third was a toddler and if it wasn't for getting the older two where they needed to be I am sure I would have wanted naps.

As you noted, it may just be a hormonal shift after weaning. If you don't start feeling better soon, consider asking your doctor to test your thyroid function. I felt pretty much exhausted after my youngest was weaned, and figured it was the stress of chasing around a baby and toddler... and then I figured, well, I'm working full time, that's tiring... and I kept making excuses. Long story short, 6 years later I discovered I had had a hypothyroid condition the entire time. Apparently pregnancy is very h*** o* the thyroid. So, just something to be aware of, just in case.

You have lots of little kids, and a little one, and weaning brings on hormone fluctuations, as might age. I would see if it evens out sooner rather than later, and if not, consider getting your thyroid checked.

I had my only real issue with "baby blues" when my first started eating a substantial amount of solids and my milk production went down. Hormones are tricky bitches.

Could it be the hormones changing now that you are done weaning?

If it continues I would just get some blood work done, just to test for low hemoglobin, etc.

Do you take a multivitamin for women in 40's with iron it in? That's what my doctor recommended.

By my last child, everything was much more tiresome. So I do think some of it has to do with age .. and having little ones underfoot.

Good luck :) (naps can be very helpful if you can manage them)

Seems like pretty much everything causes fatigue. Nursing. Weaning. Exercising. Not exercising. Sigh. I go through massive tired dips from time to time. I'm 44. Usually I need to clean up my diet, sleep more, exercise more, drink more water, take a high quality vitamin with iron, and say NO to things instead of overextending. And then I feel better after a couple of weeks of self-nurture like that. But when my three were that young: Eeek. I was just tired. Period.

Get the rest you need right now while your hormones work themselves out. Besides, you probably really need it.
