My daughter 10 months never took to a pacifer and would suck her thumb when going to bed only. Lately she has been sucking much more often. Is this normal? Am I suppose to try and stop her? First time mom so not sure.

What can I do next?

My daughter is 20 months old and still sucks her thumb. She isn't sucking her thumb more often than she used to, but she never did suck it at night only. She has always sucked it on and off during the day depending on her mood--bored, tired, overwhelmed/anxious.

As long as the thumb sucking doesn't interfere with your daughter doing other things and playing with toys so that she can learn important developmental skills (talk, stack blocks, push cars/balls, etc.), I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I've noticed that as long as my daughter is staying busy and having fun, she doesn't suck her thumb as much (as long as she isn't tired or overwhelmed) so perhaps you could try to keep your daughter busy with activities that require her to use her hands.

It's pretty normal, but if I were you, I would discourage her from sucking it outside of the bed. The more she does it, the worse her teeth will get and the harder to break that habit. Oh, and by her sucking her thumb, it increases the chances of her catching all the bugs out there. Both my kids were thumb suckers and my son finally stopped at age 4 and hasn't gotten sick often. My daughter still sucks her thumb and even tho we use the anti-bacteria wipes all the time on her (especially before we get into the car), she still gets sick a lot.
