Thinking of Opening a Kid's Party Planning Business

I am curious how many people on here would utilize a kid's party planning business if it was available to them. I have planned many parties for my child and for friend's kids and was thinking of charging for the service now. I am also looking at renting a location to host parties.

If you would be interested in this type of service could you please let me know what you think a good price would be for this type service. If I opened up a place that is 1000 sq ft and hosted parties would you just rent out the facility to do your own party? If so, how much would you pay per hour and/or per party? If you were interested in full service (decorations, invitations, fun and games, dress up, contract for cakes, etc.) at my facility, what price range would you think would be acceptable? Is there something that you would want to see at the facility and with the business that would make you more inclined to contract with it?

Just trying to think if this is doable and if there is a need for this type service.

Thanks Mommas!!

I would never use a party planner for my children's birthday to be held at my house or to plan a party at a rented place. I would be interested in a place that offered different types of parties with games/ activities. I would be willing to pay $10-15 per child, depending on what was included in the party package.

DIY is best for moms who go online and buy things from you for their parties. Don't rent any space. Just offer a service. Here's some inspiration for you: www.tomkatstudio.com
www.katelandersevents.com
You can set up an Etsy shop and make decent money though not enough to support your life 100%. It's a great side income. I have done it for a year and am in the party business here: www.queenoftartswafers.etsy.com and www.queenoftartscakes.etsy.com

Good luck!

I think that you should NOT rent a location, at least not until your buisness is making a profit. Do it out of your home and if you want to plan a party at a location (like a pool party or a mini golf course) then you can rent that location for the day. I'm not sure that you will be able to make a buisness like that work right now though, most people are scaling back on frivolous spending. Personally, I do not know anyone who would hire an event planner for a children's party, for a wedding maybe, but not a children's party! But if your area seems to have a market for that kind of thing and you have some useful connections, you could make a go of it! Good luck!

There are a lot of places to host a child's birthday party outside of the home. My daughter's have attended pool parties at the community center, pottery parties, glass fusing, Sweet and Sassy (they do hair, makeup and nails), gymnastic parties, dance parties, inside gym parties (Bounce U), rock climbing, etc... I think if you want to have your own facility you will have to come up with something very unique to attract alot of people because your overhead would be extremely high. I personally would not pay anything to just rent a room especially if I am responsible for the decorations, food etc. I have paid to go to a place like Chuck E. Cheese where pizza, drinks and cake are included. I don't think I would ever pay more than $25 per child. If I did want a facility I would probably just go to a banquet hall. Sorry to be such a downer. Perhaps I am just not your target audience. Didn't the guy who started Fed Ex get a "C" on his paper outlining the Fed Ex business model? Best of luck to you!

I think it depends on why you are interested in doing this. Is it because you think it will be a good business, or because you love kids? My daughter had a party at a local place and it was okay, but the owner didn't really seem that interested in the kids, more like it was just a business to her. I never recommended her place or booked anything else with her. Last week my daughter attended a three-day "camp" at another party place and it was wonderful. My daughter and her friend raved non-stop about the activities and the owner. I'm already spreading the word about the new place and am ready to book something else with her. I think the rate you charge depends on the going rate in your area. Have you checked out any other party places to see what they do and charge? I think renting a location would be hard because it would eat up most of your profits. Maybe you could host the parties on-site at the home of the child. Come up with a business plan and start writing down your ideas and costs. Unfortunately, even things that seem low-cost with little overhead have a way of adding up quickly and becoming unprofitable.

I have actually thought about doing this myself! I love planning and hosting kids parties, but I really don't think now is a good time for this kind of business. Most people are cutting back, and I doubt there would be much interest in hiring a children's party planner.
And I would NOT rent a location, I'm afraid you would just lose money. There is SO much competition out there, from party entertainers, to places like Chuck-E-Cheese, Pump it Up, etc.
Start small, offer your services for both at home parties and off site parties, and see how it goes. I'd start by charging 20% over the actual cost and go from there (I'm sure there are still some people willing to pay 20% overage to not have to deal with the details!)

I like the idea but don't have the disposable income. Think lots of people would be in the same shoes right now. I would have paid someone to take 10 four year olds and ENTERTAIN them for 2 hours with games, races etc. Maybe you could cut overhead and have it at your home or at the clients home????
