Tempurpedic Beds - Bed Shopping

For those who own one, how did you purchase it? Online directly from tempurpedic or in another fashion?

I seriously feel like shopping for a bed is harder than shopping for a car. Any suggestions?

How did you decide this bed was the one for you? Do you still love it? We cannot pull the trigger!!

What can I do next?

We bought a floor model. I would have loved to have had a "green" mattress but it wasn't in our budget. The tempurpedic had been on the floor of the showroom for over a year and had outgassed enough so that we had no chemical fumes when we brought it home. Out of every mattress we have ever owned it is by far my favorite. We downsized and the King Size didnt fit and we bought a traditional inner spring mattress. Will never do that again.

If you have chosen the mattress you want to purchase, style and model number, buying it online is no big deal. Don't make a decision from a website! The imitation tempurpedics will break down and most are made in China. Several people have died from the toxins in them and many hosptalized. You don't hear that on the news...

Bottom line, you will either love or hate it. If I'm not mistaken Tempurpedic still has a 30 or 90 day trial period...

Happy shopping!
M.

We went to Nebraska Furniture Mart and laid on all the beds until we found one we both liked. I've had a lot of hip problems (which we discovered was because our old bed was an extra firm, yikes!) and we ended up with their house brand flippable pillowtop. I laid on the Tempurpedic and could immediately tell that it wasn't going to be soft enough for my hip. (I'm a side sleeper)

I do have friends that love the temperpedic, but we love our new one, too. (I think the brand was Omaha Bedding) and it was so much cheaper.

I would recommend the "Aireloom" brand bed.
Here is their link:
http://www.aireloom.com/home.html

Its a handmade mattress.
Green product.
Its synchronized support ADAPTS and REACTS to your body nurturing proper body balance, optimum pressure relief, and supreme comfort.

A friend of mine, got one. LOVES it. She has many aches and pains and scoliosis and hip pain. It is greatly helped her.
She got it at a bedding showroom.
She said it is WELL worth the price.

Its Specs:
Featuring:
• Body pressure-relieving construction
• Man-made and natural components
• Patent pending “fill box” design OR
original handcrafted
• Contains no polyurethane foam
• English outer tufting
Springs/coils:
• Natural Talalay latex
• Lumbar support
Edge support:
• Natural latex foam encasement
Fabrics:
• Certified organic cotton
• Jacquard damask OR Heavy stretch knit
•Oeko-Tex
Comfort/upholstery layers:

As an aside: I would NOT purchase a bed, online. You gotta try it. In a showroom. To make sure you like, the bed and it is comfortable.

We bought a tempurpedic bed last month from Sleep Country. We tested six models, starting with the least expensive (and seemingly firmest) up to the hugely expensive (and softer) "cloud" styles and the one that Oprah sleeps on thats about $4500. Yikes. And yes - that one seemed to be the most comfortable, of course! But after spending 6-8 minutes lying on each one, we settled on one that was closer to the less-expensive end of the scale. We did start to "shop around", hoping that some of the other stores had cheaper prices, and stopped to see if the Memorial Day "tax free" events at some stores might save us $200, but quickly learned that the Tempurpedic parent company controls all the pricing in all of the stores, and doesn't allow tax-free events to apply to their mattresses (because it is basically a percentage off the bottom line).

Sleep Country delivered the bed the next day. You'll find whatever version you buy will seem EXTRA firm when it arrives, and needs a couple of weeks to soften up. The saleswoman at our store told me to stand on it - walk all over it - to soften up the foam a bit. (Actually, she suggested we let our 3-year-old jump all over it, but I didn't want to set that precident.)

We knew years ago that we wanted a tempurpedic bed after sleeping on one for a few nights at a B&B. We had a pillow-top matress up until last month (only about 5 years old, too!) and it had gotten so soft that I woke up multiple times each night with back pain, and was in such pain in the morning that I couldn't lift my 3-year-old off the floor, and had to hobble around for 30 minutes waiting for my back to limber up. After our first night on the Tempurpedic, I slept all night and woke up without any back pain. It was amazing. Even my husband, who insisted he was comfortable on the old mattress, says now that he's sleeping better and waking up more "refreshed", even after a short night of sleep. It's wonderful. We also opted for the zero-interest pay-it-off-over-3-years financing, so we didn't have to shell out $2000+ on the spot. Payments are about $70/month now. A great investment. I wish we'd done this years ago.

Edit to add: take your own pillow when go to the mattress store. Our store had pillows to use, but no pillowcases. Yuck! I ended up covering the pillow I took from bed to bed with my sweater, but wished I'd brought my own comfy pillow from home.

Apparently pillows are just as important, lol.... So if you get a new bed you may need to check out the pillows too, hehe Many say the Tempupredic pillows are worth it :)

Good luck!

I decided to get one because my back was killing me in the last 2 beds I had. It's almost motionless, so you really do sleep better; you won't toss and turn, also the bed won't jiggle when your SO gets in and out of the bed in the middle of the night; I'm a light sleeper, so this was great for me. I bought mine at Rooms-to-Go, the pillows too. They had a few different models to choose from, and I was able to use my R2G credit card, which has no interest and no payments for 2 years. I would recommend to find a place where you can actually try it out. BTW, I still LOVE my bed (4yrs!); almost every night that I lay down, I say to myself "God, I love this bed!" Lol... ;)

My husband and I bought a Tempurpedic in January from a mattress store (we live in the LA area) which was great because the owner was really helpful and we got to test a few different models to decide which one we wanted. My exact thoughts after spending about 3 hours there-with a toddler and six months pregnant :-), was that it was like shopping for a car!
LOVE the Temperpedic mattress we bought...money well spent!

We purchased ours from a furniture store (Nebraska Furniture Mart) during the Berkshire Hathaway Days (b/f the stock split) and saved a TON of money. I'm not sure how far Cherryville is from KC, but there's an NFM there.

As far as the Tempurapedic, all of our friends had one and they all loved it... so we went down to NFM and tried it out one afternoon--seriously, we laid there for quite some time.

That said, some things to know going into purchasing one--when you get it home it is NOT nearly as "soft" as the ones that have seen traffic in the store, it takes some breaking in. They retain heat (and coincidentally, you cannot use an electric blanket with one) so we purchased a guardsman cover for it that helps keep it a little cooler. And it does not have the typical "spring" of a traditional mattress, and you sink into it... something to think about when it comes to other mattress activities. ;-)

Honestly, we like it better (2 years later) than we did when we purchased it. It took some time to break it in, so it gets better with time!

I LOVE our tempurpedic. We got it from Nebraska Furniture Mart in KC. Expensive, yes (you probably could get it cheaper somewhere/how on the net but I wasn't willing to wait)! Worth it? I wish we did it 10 years ago.

It stunk the first couple of nights. You have to 'jump' on it (seriously, the guy told us it opens the pores and lets out the chemical smell) so we gave our three kids the go ahead! It worked my legs out more than wallking in sand at the beach!

It's also kind of hot at night. Not a problem if you are AC freaks like me, but you certainly don't want a down comforter on it in the middle of summer (my husband keeps ours on it for the 'weight' and it drives me crazy!)

My husband had carpel tunnel issues, shoulder, back, and neck issues, and his arms and hands were constantly falling asleep. No more.

I used to wake up at every little toss and turn from hubby (it was like a homade wave maker!). No more. Sometimes, even if I am awake with my eyes closed, I can't tell if he's gotten out of bed.

We each got our own temperpedic pillows that suit our sleep forms (him-stomach, me- side) and I'll never own another pillow either.
