Teen Acne Scars

My son is 16 and has been having horrible bouts of acne. He is taking Doxycycline twice a day as prescribed by a dermatologist which has helped but we are still fighting it. I don't want him on Accutane but it seems to be the next step.
My main concern at this point is the scarring. Has anyone had any luck speeding up the healing of scars? I am interested primarily (although at this point I'd probably try anything) in a natural alternative i.e. coconut oil, essential oils etc. Anyone have any ideas??

What can I do next?

My daughter’s dermatologist gave it to her own son and my daughter’s ped. gave it to her daughter. I know a few dozen teens that have been on it. They all now have beautiful skin. If your son has bad side effects he could stop but my daughter’s dermatologist said she never once had to stop treatment due to side effects. Just do it before your son has permanent life long scars.

So very sorry. My nephew had this and his mother was very worried about the Accutane, but it was a godsend and she was sorry that she didn't try it earlier. Try not to stress too much about it. Go ahead and try it.

My sons had moderate acne. Their dermatologist had an esthetician on staff. I took them on a regular basis to her for microdermabrasion for both face and back. It was SO worth the money, E.. A good esthetician with a good machine can make a huge difference in your son's skin. There is a sticky substance on the skin that holds in the impurities and oils. This procedure removes the sticky substance and pulls out the impurities. It makes it easier for the medicine that they put on the face to actually reach down into the skin as well.

My son's esthetician also used a curette to open up the top of where there were big blackheads so that removing them wouldn't "squeeze" the blackhead and cause scarring around the area.

I highly recommend that you talk to your son's dermatologist about this. If there is not an esthetician on staff, they can tell you where to go. And go ahead and try the Accutane.

I grew up with someone who had horrible total body acne.
It took 3 tries with different medications from the dermatologist before they found something that worked.
He ended up with no scarring.
But even if he had them - he wears a beard now anyway - so it makes no difference.
