My son has this small bump/knot on the left side of his neck and the school nurse said it is a swollen gland. He doesn't seem to be sick so what could this be from??
Thanks!

Hi Angela, I guess it's some kind of virus going on b/c I just had the same thing... Right side of my neck was bothering me for few days... but then I started getting a fewer... Went to ENT and he said I have swollen gland and infection... got antybiotic... The rest of the family is fine, it was just me. So just watch him and see if his body will be able to fight the virus off or if he gets worse he might need help from the doctor. But def. nothing to worry to much about..

My son had a swollen gland at 2 and wasnt sick. Ped told us not to worry unless it changed. He still has it now at almost 3 years old and it has never been a problem. Ped said it could stay like that for years.

Hello! Take him to an ENT and have it checked out. It is probably nothing maybe a cold coming on. I had that years ago and it was my nose draining into my limph notes. THe Ent can do some tests to make sure everything is fine, or put your son on meds. Good luck.

Hi Angela,
Here's another option to consider: I had a spider bite on the back of my neck 3 weeks ago. It blew up to the size of a golf ball. It was painful and itchy at the same time. Then it went away. But the following morning I woke up with a large grape-sized bump on the side of my neck. It is still there but seems to be a tiny bit smaller daily. I haven't seen a doctor because I have no other symptoms. I'm guessing that my system is still trying to fight off the toxins from the spider bite. And this may be what is going on in your situation.

he could just be starting to get sick. I'd keep an eye on him, watch for sore throat, runny nose, etc.
If nothing like that starts, and the gland stays swollen, call your odctor and have him checked just to be safe.
If the other symptoms show, you might still want to take him to the doctor to check for strep and such... it's that time of year.

Hello,
My oldest son has that. It flares up when ever he is fighting getting sick, or is sick. My pediatrician said not to worry it is just the glands fighting the bacteria in his system. If you feel uncomfortable with it i suggest talking to your ped.
Hope this helps,
J.

A small, pea sized bump like a knot on the side of his neck it is most likely a swollen lymph node. I am nearing 40 and have a one in my neck that I first noticed over 20 years ago that has stayed consistently the size of a pea. My son has one in his neck, too. I just monitor his and mine, and as long as it doesn't get bigger there is no cause for concern, per my doctors and his. Just one of those things that makes us each unique!

My brother had this when he was young and now that he's 22, still has that swollen gland. It was never anything to be concerned about for him.

My son had the same thing, I took him to the doctor and was told it is nothing to worry about. She did however check it for changes whenever she saw him. He is now 21, still has it, and the doctors still don't worry.

A swollen gland can signify the presence of an infection or the body trying to fight off an impending cold or something like that. My LO often has swollen glands when he doesn't seem ill. Sometimes a cold comes after, sometimes not. It should resolve on it's own in a few days. If it doesn't go away and he doesn't come down with a cold or something else, I would take him to see an MD. Im sure it ill go away though!
