Sudden Hypothermic Fever with No Known Cause

The other day my son was at daycare. He awoke from his nap and went to sit for his snack. They noticed his lips and fingertips were blue and he was shivering. His temperature was 96.1F. They immediately called me at work. I asked them to recheck his temp in 15 minutes while I was on my way. When they checked it again it was 95.9F. By the time we got to the doctor's office (which was immediately after picking him up) his temp was back up to 97.1F. (His normal temp is around 97.6F.) My doctor could not explain the cause and said not to worry. Have any of you experienced this or know someone who has? I am concerned about either a circulatory problem or a respiratory problem, but I have no other reasons or ideas. Also, he had NOT been outside at all since arriving at daycare that day. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you!!

My grandson does this periodically. It is a little frightening and I talked to his physician about it. We did this about two weeks ago on a Saturday. He went down to 91.3 and then up and later in the day went back down to 93.7 and then back up. I'm not sure which I like best, this low grade thing or when he was about a year old and had the sudden rise in tempreture and the sizures (sp) but I think this is easier to work with. I find that making sure he gets hydratrated seems to help fight this one off.

His body could have been fighting off something like a bug virus he picked up at day care. I often go low on my temp. But within minutes to hours it is normal again. I rarely get sick.My immune system works over time all the time. That makes me tired a lot but never sick. Some folks just have that and others don't. I feel very fortunate as both of my younger sisters are always ill with one thing or another. We all have the same dad, but the youngest has a different Mom. Now she gets colds and virus stuff constantly and so do her two daughters. My dad is never sick and my Mom rarely gets sick, we eat healthy and drink plenty of water and get good exercise daily. My middle sister is so ill all the time I was beginnning to think she had it in her head to be sick so became sick but the Dr.s after 25 years finally found she has a severe vitamin deficiency and her body doesn't absorb things as it is suppose too. Now she has eat small meals more frequently and take vitamin shots to boost her immune system. They also found she has extra smalll kidneys and very small bladder , and it is a inherited thing from my mom's side of the family.

My grandson (now 23 mths) had a this same thing happen a couple of times. Once included a trip to the ER when his lips and fingertips turned blue after lunch with no apparent reason. After a visit to the pediatrician and then to a pediactric cardiologist, my son and daughter in law were assured that this is perfectly normal and that little ones "thermostats" sometimes take time to mature. It has not happen anymore, and he is a perfectly healthy, ACTIVE, almost 2 year old.

Hi A.,

How scary and weird! I asked a respiratory therapist for her input. It does not sound like a respiratory problem since usually the fever will go up.

I would seek a second opinion if I were you. The brain will maintain a constant temp of the body. Since he was shivering his body was trying to warm itself up.

I am sorry I don't have the answer...

Hi A.,

I have need to write to you to tell you I took care of a little boy at a Preschool with this rare problem. I will try to find the name of the diagnosis again, but he had the same problem. I was the Office Manager at the facility and we always had a steroid cream at the front desk for emergencies when his fingers would turn blue/white. Usually it would happen if he was outside for 10-15 minutes and he got too cold. I would have to immediately rub the cream into his fingers to get the color back. I really think you need to look into this and get a second opinion if you have too. I don't think you should panic, but just schedule an appointment. Good luck!

I wouldn't freak too much especially since this is an isolated incident. And since he normally runs a little low, 95/96 really isn't that low. My son normally runs 96 and temps drop almost every night. His drops to 92-93. Alot of other parents I've talked to have had this happen to their children a time or two as well. It also can depend on where you take the temp. If he's just cold, then if you take it under the arm it's not going to be accurate because his body is cold, so therefore his temp will be lower. It can be he getting sick(does not always cause fever.) He can just have gotten cold. But, if you are truely worried then talk to your docs. But, if it doesn't happen again then I wouldn't stress too much. Unless he was having issues breathing then I wouldn't worry bout respiratory problems. We are looking into a possible autonomic disorder for my little one. But, like I said his is an everyday thing. But, I have talked to several docs and they have all at least once told me that some kids just get cold during sleep. Let's pray that's all that was wrong with your little boy.

There is never NO cause or reason - take him to a doctor that will do bloodwork, check for cancers, check for everything leaving no stones unturned. That is not normal. Don't wait but don't panic either. I'd suggest calling Dr. Debbie McFarland as well - or another Chiropractor.
