Stupid Grey Hairs!

I just dyed my hair last Wed. I do it myself, but I go to Sally's and get professional color, apply it, let sit for the 20 minutes, rinse out, condition it, then I don't wash it for 2-3 days. But I look in the mirror this morning and I have my grey hair popping back out!!!!!!!!!!!! UGH!! I'm only 24 and I have greys. I in fact started getting them when I was 16!!!!! I'm so sick of them! It used to just be here and there, but now they are everywhere!
I do use shampoo and conditioner made for treated hair. I'm doing everything by the book so I'm confused as to why I'm getting them not even a week after dying. I double checked and it is in fact a long hair, and not one that decided to grow overnight. They day after I checked and there weren't any greys, so I don't think it was hiding.
What do you all do? Anything that I am in fact doing wrong, but thought I was doing right? Should I change my haircolor to where my grey's aren't so prominent. My hair is usually a nice black (used to naturally be black :( ). Maybe do a coppery brown, or a deep chestnut?

So What Happened?

Later on in life, I will embrace the grey's, but I'm only freaking 24 (today in fact!!!!) and so I'm not willing to embrace just yet. :D
Oh and yes, this most defiantly is permanent hair color. I don't think I have ever even used semi.
mamatothreewee You said it perfectly. I do sometime care about how I look, but most of the time of the time, I go out with out any make up, I care, but not obsessed. Grey hairs is just that irk that bugs the crap out of me!

Gray hairs are notoriously hard to cover, and as such, the color does not penetrate/hold on gray hair as well as it does on other colors.

I don't know much about dyes, but perhaps you should try switching to a dye that's made for stubborn grays? I don't know if there's actually any difference between those and regular dye, but maybe worth a try?

My hair started getting a few grays when my son was a preschooler (coincidence?) when I was 39.
I tried commercial dye for awhile (dye about once a month) but it was frying my hair.
After a few years of that, I gave it all up and went for henna instead.
Now, henna isn't for everyone - you end up soaking your head in what looks a lot like goose poop for 5 hours (about once every 8 weeks), but the most harsh thing in it is vinegar and my scalp and hair love it.
I get a beautiful auburn color with the gray becoming coppery highlights.
My hair isn't damaged anymore - I haven't had a split end in years.
I don't smell like ammonia (I add a pinch of ground cloves to my mix so I smell like a pumpkin pie for a few days), my hair comes out soft and shiny.
If you want something darker you can add some indigo to your mix.
Using body art quality henna make a big difference.

I turned 28 on May 23.

I had never seen a grey hair on my head.

two weeks after my birthday I was looking at my face in the mirror..happened to look up at my hair and.....SHABAAAAMMM....Three grey hairs. I pulled them faster then a biker pulls his ham string!

I found like fifteen total over the next few days.

My neighbor came and dyed my hair a few weeks ago.

I makes me sad..because I am not a vein person. I dont care what I look like..ever..but for some reason the grey hair issue is a pretty hard one for me....I dont feel old..they make me look it though:)

I wish I could ''like'' your So what happened:)....Where is the Like key when I need it:)

I was gonna say what Jo said. As long as your hair place is saying this product has good gray coverage, you probably just need to leave it on longer.I'd try 45 minutes next time.

(sorry bout the gray, I found a couple gray EYEBROWS recently, what in the WORLD?!)

I've been gray since the age of 16 too.

Are you using a direct dye or something with ammonia?
Wait until you begin finding gray eyebrows and in nether region.

Try a golden brown of some sort.

I can honestly say that I just buy the cheapest box (Revlon Color Silk) that I find. Sometimes I can get Preferance on sale with a coupon for only a few bucks too. But I don't go with the expensive stuff. Doesn't last for me either.

If you are using the Ion, you are not keeping it on long enough. Roots sit for 30 minutes then another ten to the ends. I also shampoo it the next day. I have no problem with my greys.

try leaving the color on your hair longer, greys are very stubborn and sometimes need the color to sit on longer to really penetrate the hair!!

Doing highlights helps cover the grey. Also I find using a rinse keeps the grey away longer than dye. I like Ms Clariol. I have them pretty bad too and I hate them. I refuse to embrace them so good luck with your hunt for the best grey hider.

Hi megandollie-

I know I am much older than you...but maybe 'embrace' your grey??

My Best Friend in HS (donkey years ago...lol) had dark hair with grey sprinkled through (her mom was already w a beautiful snowy white) and she was (still is) stunning! (she also had a great personality...so that helped too!)

I am a 'naturally' mousy brown...and did highlights for a long time...now I am back to natural...and waiting patiently for the grey to keep coming! I have 'earned' them...

Just a thought!

Also...have heard henna can be quite pretty....

Best Luck!

Meg, I have darker hair as well and started going gray at 18. I am 30 now and my grays start poking out about 2-3 weeks after dying my hair. I read recently that you can buy a product at most beauty supply stores called a "neutral protein filler" that can help the color not to fade so fast. I have not tried it yet, but am planning to. They also sell shampoos and conditioners for brunettes that have a bit of color in them, and I wonder if that would help as well.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!... I'm a natural redhead, 27 years old, and I have grays ;) I dye my hair out of a box, and since grays grow faster, I pluck them as I see them. Eventually, probably this summer in fact, I'm saying 'screw it!' and letting the grays fly. I really just don't care ;)

You might want to check with your favorite hairdresser about this. As you acquire more and more gray, you'll find (from your expert) that it may need to be worked on differently. At least, that's what my hairdresser tells me.

And by the way, welcome to the club! My hair started turning when I was a teen. There are lots of us. Although I played around with hair color, eventually I let it go natural. I was blessed with a good inheritance on that score, so it looks all right. Maybe yours might, too. (There is a point at which your hair will look frosted, which can be pretty cool.) On the other hand, if I wanted to color my hair, it would have to be a permanent color designed for gray or white. Color shampoos or temporary colors won't do a thing for me.
