I am still breastfeeding my 11 month old and I am experiencing breast pain on my left breast. Not quite sure what to make of it. I have had mastitis, but I am not sure if this is what it could be. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your great advice everyone! I did go to see my doctor and it turned out to be lazy breastfeeding/not latching on right and the fact that my little one now has 6 teeth, which we are now weaning him off the breast! Thanks again!

Like the others have said it could be many things, a clogged duct which could lead to mastitis, thrush (which causes not only nipple pain but deep breast tissue pain as well) or many many other things. I'd do some research on it by searching on the internet or talking to a health care provider and describing the type of pain and where it is just to be safe and find some relief.

I forgot to add that if it is indeed thrush that the best thing I used (and it was highly reccomended) was Gentian Violet that I found at the apothecary shop (in the tulsa area). It is over the counter and I believe it was around $7 for the bottle (cheaper than my co-pays for insurance). It is extremely messy and will stain not only clothes but your nipples and babies lips for a couple days but will get it cleared up better than anything I know in just a couple applications.

Is there any white stuff on baby's toung or roof of his/her mouth? If so it's probably Thrush. I had this once & it is very painful. If you think this could be it contact your pediatrition & he or she should be able to prescribe something for you & baby.

Could be PMS-related, or you could be pregnant.

it really depends on where the pain is.

deep in the breast could be a clogged duct which also coincides with mastitis but I've never had that so I can't really help with the other symptoms.

just the nipple could be thrush (a yeast infection mentioned earlier in another post)

There are other ligamental pains that feel like they are in the breast but aren't.

Try warm compresses for anything but the sore nipple possibility, that one requires diflucan for you and the baby.

If it is pain on your nipple, and itches a little then it could be Thrush. If it is your whole breast then it could what I experienced...At about 7 months on I noticed if my breast got really full of milk, and then pumped alot or let DS nurse a lot my whole breast would be kind of achy or hurt all over. I think it was just because I would let the breast get engorged or too full of milk and then draining it just made it kind of sore. Sorry hard to explain, I hope you get what I am saying. :)

I think it sounds like the beginning of mastitis. I would call your dr. and have it checked out.
