Hi, my son is just 5 and he is severely developmentally delayed. Its kinda of like raising an 18 month old in a 5 year olds body. Anyway, I just noticed that 2 of his front bottom teeth are really lose. Earlier in the day he was quite cranky and it has just gotten worse, and even more worse after I wiggled his teeth. The dentist said to give him medicine and see if he calms down. I am wondering if he is not ok with the sensation of loose teeth and if I should just have the dentist pull them to avoid any more pain from the teeth. Any one have any experience with this? Thanks
I was a Dental assistant before becoming a stay at home mommy and i think it's not a bad idea to just go get the teeth pulled. Since they are already loose and ready to come out it won't effect the permanent teeth. The dentist can even give your son pain meds or sedate him before treatment so even though I'm sure he will be scared he won't feel any pain.

My son will be 4 next month he was born with Downs Syndrome so I know all about developmental delays..sigh..anyway we have not had the teeth problem but, if he will sit for an x-ray maybe the dentist could see if he has permanent teeth coming in behind them. If so maybe pulling them would be a good choice, if not I'm wondering if missing teeth would cause feeding issues? So much to consider when you have special little people. If you pull a tooth too soon it can cause damage to the permenant teeth behind it. Ask your Dentist. However if it is something that is hurting which it really shouldn't just being loose then I would also ask your dentist about this. Get him excited about the tooth fairy, if he isn't about money then maybe have the tooth fairy bring him something like a special toy he loves instead. The first teeth coming out is scary even for any child. My daughter could not wait until her teeth were loose, then when the bottom ones became loose she freaked, wanted me to "glue" them back down, hee hee.

Hi M., I also have a son that is severely delayed. He turned 8 on 3/2. He is just a little peanut, 12-18 mo ht. & wt. About 10mo cognative. He also started loosing his baby teeth, but not in the usual order. The first one took me a couple of days to figure out it was loose, because it was an eye tooth. I would recommend taking him to the dentist to have it removed. For me it was very difficult to wiggle the tooth out and I was afraid he would just swollow it. For us it is not always the most pleasant experiance to go to the dentist. But, our dentist is very good and patient with him. My son is more cooperative when we sing to brush his teeth, so the staff will also sing to him. Good luck.
