To Make a Long email.. SHORT. I will make this brief.. My 6 year old daughter is in kindergarten and is big for her age. She is reading and doing above and beyond academically.. Self help skills she is behind in.. but all she needs is more practice with that? My concern is socially.. she loves her classmates knows them by last name, very into words,books...She will draw with them if they come over to her but will seldom go out and say" may I play with you" She stares in space when waiting for the teacher to tell her what to do next.. wondering if she is bored in kindergarten, needs more in a classroom. I know she needs more social interaction without structure... Are there tests to do socially... Thanks for your time

What can I do next?

I'd get her involved in an outside school activity - girl scouts, gymnastics, dancing, tae kwon do, an arts/craft class where she can meet and interact with others her age in an outside school environment. Sometimes it's hard to find kindred spirits, but the more people she meets, the better chances she has of finding other girls who share her interests. That she interacts with people who come up to her is a good sign. My son has a 'wait and see' approach to see how groups work before he's willing to jump in himself. At the beginning of any school years his teachers say he's shy, but by the middle of the year they have trouble getting him to stay quiet. Turns out he has an opinion on practically everything, it just takes him a while to get warmed up.

Is your daughter currently diagnosed as being on the Autism spectrum? If so, contact your school psychologist and request that the process for special education review be initiated.

If this is your descriptive term, then that's a different story. Not sure what you're asking, but I would suggest a parent-teacher conference and request that either the school psychologist or school counselor join you. Express you concerns and see what they have to say.

There are assessments for social development and you are free to request them: Vineland Adaptive Rating Scales, Behavior Assessment System for Children and more specific scales if you are concerned about Autism. Speak with your school team and the pediatrician.

You could also enroll her in outside activities such as art, music or a play group.

yes there are- good for you to ask- you can go through your pedi - tell of your concerns of self help skills and social concerns-ask for a reference for an educational testing psychologist. another idea is for you to find an occupational therapist. you don't have to have a physicians referral- just ask to meet with them to discuss your concerns- they are able to at least access and will let you know if they think further testing/intervention is necessary. be an advocate and go for it- you and your daughter will be blessed because of it.

I'm confused by the title of your post. Has she been diagnosed with autism?
Or is that just used as a term to describe her social skills?

Anyway, if she IS autistic, isn't she getting some service from the school? They can work on socializing with her.

Is she involved in any outside of school activities, groups or sports?

Can you invite O. of her friends over to play a few times per month so she can have O.-on-O. socializing experience?
