Sleep Issues with My Newborn

UPDATED: Hi again, to answer your questions -- I do swaddle him -- I have the Miracle Swaddle blanket, and it's the best I've used. It really helps in calming him down. The thing is, he seems to still squirm in the basinette, where as when he is in the swing, he is cozy and doesn't move, and that's why I think he sleeps better.

The reason I don't want to continue this way is because...I guess I am just so tired...so eager to get things on track -- having the toddler to manage as well has me eager to get us all settled into a routine. Maybe prematurely so? I dunno. Also, I wonder if the swing sleeping is safe? I am sure it is (I hope so...because like I said, my first was the same way and he was there for at least four months). Also, I sometimes fall asleep breastfeeding him and leave him on my chest or in my bed...I guess I just want to eliminate the habits (I won't say bad habits, because we all do whatever we can to get some sleep in these first months!).

Short answer -- I guess I am just trying to begin with the end in mind...AND I AM JUST SO SLEEPY! :) Thanks for all your advice...this gloomy Dublin weather isn't helping my mental state either...SO HOMESICK. Give Southern Cali my love, everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi ladies,

I have a newborn baby -- he's coming up on four weeks. Like my older son, who is now 20 months, he doesn't sleep well in the basinette. I put him down awake, he will fall asleep (or I will nurse or rock him to sleep), and 15 minutes later, he's up. I can sooth him back to sleep with a rub SOMETIMES, but even then, he's up again in another 15. BUT -- if I put him in the sling or cradle-swing (not turned on), he can sleep undisturbed for up to four hours. Any ideas? My first son slept in the swing for four months, and I don't want to do that again. I want to fix this now. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Just wondering if you swaddle him in the bassinette. He may like the closeness. I found that to be key with my son!
Good luck!

I can just tell you from my experience with my now 21-month old daughter. She slept with me until 3 months and I started trying the basinette. It took a while to get her and keep her down in it but my husband got the idea of using the swaddle blanket. I was concerned at first because I did not want her to get her face covered but it worked. It did take about a week or so.

my son has also never taken to the bassinet. I am wondering why I should not want him to fall asleep in his swing. My son is now 11 weeks old and has been sleeping in either his swing or glider. I assumed it was because he doesn't seem to like being flat on his back. In the evenings he gets colic symptoms and has a hard time from 8 pm-10:30 like clockwork every night. Since this is my first child I would love to know why you don't want him to get used to falling asleep in the swing, and any suggestions for preventing this if it's not desirable.

He is used to hearing your heartbeat in the womb and the motion of your movement. He's outside now and likes your smell and touch. Try putting his basinnete sheet or blankets in your bed while you sleep one night...then put them in basinnete and see if the familiar smell of mommy eases his feeling of seperation. I put my newborn in my bed (til he could roll over of course!)to sleep and he responded with lots of ZZZ's, but not in any other areas til he was around 3 months...

I would let him sleep where he can rest at this age it is not a big deal. Have you read babywise?
