Skin Infection Turning into Cellulitis?

My daughter has an infection in the tissue on the outside of her ear, because of scratching her ear and causing it to bleed and subsequently get infected. My pediatrician put her on an oral antibiotic and said to also apply Neosporin directly to the wound. She said if not treated properly, this could turn into Cellulitis. I'm wondering if anyone has dealt first hand with cellulitis or heard much about it? I googled it and found out the basics, and it scared me! Of course we are caring for the ear as directed, but I am worried about this possibility of cellulitis.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advice and support! My daughter saw her doctor yesterday and received a clean bill of health. Her ear sore has healed completely and luckily did not develop into cellulitis. My worry was for naught. Thanks again for all the help!

Definately keep an eye on it. My ex husband had it and ended up in the hospital for days. Watch for fever, red marks around the infected area. It can be treated with antibodics. Also, it can reoccur, so if you see any signs of reoccurance call your doctor asap. If you catch it early, it can be treated quickly.

My son just had cellulitis around his eye. It definately got worse before it got better and was scary, but they treated it with 2 different antibiotics and it cleared up. I was really nervous after googling it too, but he was fine within a matter of a week. Good luck, let me know how everything turns out, but I'm sure she'll be fine :-)

I have a 3 year old son that had celluitis about 2 months ago. His started out a small stratch/cut then turn into follicalitis and then in turned into celluitis and a staph infection with an abcess. He was put on antibiotics because of the infection. He then had to have it lanced because it wouldn't drain on it's own and we were worried about the staph infection going into his blood system. All of this happened within two or three days. The size of it doubled in size in one day. While he was on antibiotic alone, it seemed like it didn't do much but once it was lanced it finally went away and he is doing fine (although there is a small scar on his face). Is there a chance maybe she also has a staph infection? If you need to know more, please email me. I actually have pictures of my sons face for comparison if your interested. You can email me through here or ____@____.com

Good Luck & God Bless

There is an alternative you might try. Have you heard of the mangosteen fruit? I am a distributor for the original company that brought this amazing whole-fruit juice drink to the United States. We are not allowed to say that it will cure conditions/diseases per FDA rules & regulations, as Mangosteen is not a drug. But I, my husband, my family, and many of my friends have benefited greatly from drinking the juice. This juice has no side effects. It is safe enough for newborn babies.

I recommend you give her a couple drops to begin along with plenty of water. Increase the dosage gradually to about one half ounce two or three times daily; allowing her body to adjust to the consumption. The first thing that will happen is the elimination of toxins from her body, which MAY be revealed in loose bowels. Also, directly apply some of the juice. Allow a small amount of the juice to dry-up slightly, to a paste consistency, as it will stay on longer.
You can purchase the juice on this website: www.Mew.Gomangosteen.net

It is sad that the medical establishment gives more and more drugs to treat the effects of other drugs. This doesn't make sense, because ALL drugs have side effects. A drug is a drug, whether prescribed or illegal. Natural is always best.

B.,

My 5 year old daughter JUST had cellulitis last week. I had never heard of it before she was diagnosed in the Urgent Care. We aren't sure how she got it because there was no "trauma". She developed a very high fever and was diagnosed with strep throat. When her fever didn't go down and her forehead became red and then began to swell, we were sent to CMH where they did a CAT scan and put her on IV antibiotics for 3 days. She responded very well to the antibiotics and was released after 3 days. She's TOTALLY fine now and back at school. We have a follow-up visit with her PCP tomorrow, and expect a clean bill of health.

My advice is to keep a very close eye on the area, and if it begins to swell, go to Urgent Care. She'll be OK...

Hello. One of the children that I care for during the week had cellulitis in his eye. At first we just thought it was pink eye. The doctor put him on a round of medicines and he is now fine. It can turn in to something more serious if not treated properly. Just follow the doctors orders and she should be fine. E.

I myself dhad cellulitis. It is scary and not something to mess around with. It can and will be okay. Be diligent with her antibiotics. Keep a close eye on it and follow up with the doc even if it looks better. I was on oral anti-biotics and got anti-biotic shots every day for 3 days. It will be okay! Good luck!!!

I got cellulitis on my c-section incision a few weeks after baby was born. It isn't that scary but just annoying and itchy. After it cleared up from antibiotics I still use cortaid on it so it doesn't get infected again. Cortaid seemed to work the best and whenever the incision gets itchy I put it on there and it disappears within a few hours. The doctor didn't put the incision together right so I still have problems with it after 8 years especially when the weather is hot.
I also had sores behind my ears as a child and don't remember what my mom put on it all the time but eventually that problem went away as I got older.

My daughter had an abcessed tooth, she had complained that her tooth hurt the night before. Unfortunately, we were going to a dentist who preferred his Nitrous Oxide over his patients' well-being. He met us at the office on a Friday because he was a personal friend and looked at the tooth and said it was okay. I asked him to x-ray it (which he Should Have) and he wouldn't. He said to give her some medicine for pain and come back Monday if it wasn't better.

The next morning the whole side of her face was very swollen and she had a headache. I took her to our doctors' after-hour care. The doctor on call said she had severe cellulitis and a sinus infection. I worked with these doctors and he put her on an antibiotic and asked me to call him if she got worse and let him know how she was the next morning. The next morning was worse! The swelling had increased quite a bit. The other side of her face looked normal. I called him and he told me he was not at the clinic, but he would inform the Dr. who was. He told me to take her in immediately. As it turned out, they were both there when I arrived and they put her in the hospital.

Her regular pediatrician was out of town and did not see her until the swelling had subsided and she had been in the hospital three days. He was shocked at the amount of swelling that she still had. After she was past the 'danger zone' they told me the reason they had admitted her to the hospital was because the cellulitis had entered her sinuses and it is so close to her brain, they were watching her for meningitis. Had they told me, they knew I would not get any rest, but I stayed with her at the hospital and they were extremely attentive. We later realized this was all due to her tooth which was indeed abcessed and we found another dentist and once the infection was gone; we had the tooth removed because it was a baby tooth.

Cellulitis is a serious infection and should be treated as your doctor orders! Facial cellulitis in children is not to be treated lightly, and can turn into meningitis in 8% or other complications. I am not trying to scare you, but this can develop rapidly if not treated correctly. Listen to your doctor; 90% treated properly is effective! The others require more extensive care.

You did not say how old your daughter is. If she is an infant or toddler, you might consider putting a sock or mitten that you can use soft medical tape around her wrist to keep her from scratching her ear. If she is older, I think some discipline is in order. When you see her reaching to scratch her ear, calmly tell her that you love her and she cannot do this. Put her in 'time out' according to her age, (1 minute per year) for example: 2 minutes for a 2 year old, 3 minutes for a 3 yr old, etc. I hope this helps and good luck!

I have first hand experience. Had it myself from an infected tooth years ago. One side of my face swelled up - pretty! Also, when my son was 5 years old I noticed that one ear was bigger than the other. It didn't look red or sore, just the entire ear was bigger. He was diagnosis with cellulitis. Doc thought he had probably had a bug bite even though there was no evidence of one. He was placed on oral antibiotics (as I was) and it took a while but it did take care of the problem. You should let doctor know of any swelling but chances are, the oral antibiotic will prevent this. I do understand cellulitis is most offen caused by staph and some people seem more prone to staph infections than others - my son has had two other small staph infections since (he's 15 now) so whenever he has an open sore, we watch carefully. Back when he was 5, I made the best of the situation and made a scrapbook page, LOL! Good luck!

I am a 33 yr old mother of 3 and about 1 1/2yrs ago I had a bug bite and went to my doctor and he put me on an oral anitbiotic and it got worse--i didn't think too much about it until about 8 hrs later when I could not walk on it. We went to the emergency room where they admitted me and kept me for two more days--cellulitis! It was very scary and it spread very fast through my body. The bottom half of my leg was very red and very hot were the symptoms. I really think that our bodies can usually fight it off and when it can't it becomes cellulitis. I am very heathly person and it was just s weird thing that happened. I kind of wish my doctor would have made me aware of such thing.

Hi B.,

I actually had one of my twin daughters get cellulitis in her left lower leg at 2 months of age and end up in the hospital for 4 days. It can be very disturbing and hers came on insanely fast. It turns out that hers was a secondary infection that was caused by her eczema which both of my girls have. She recovered quite well and although she gave everyone quite a fright in the hospital it was mainly because we could not get her fever to come down. With her age we could only give Tylenol for her fever and although she was on 2 different IV antibiotics it just moved very quickly since she was so little.
The main thing to watch for is if her ear becomes red, swollen, tender to the touch and if she starts running a fever. The main causes of cellulitis are staph and strep (not the throat kind). The staph is normally the very treatable one and not the one that you hear about in the news that is hospital or community acquired that is so difficult to treat.
I would say that as long as you are following doctor's orders and you keep an eye on her she will be fine. Cellulitis is acutally just a skin infection that is usually a second infection to something else (i.e. scratch of some kind or bug bite). My main advise to you would be wash your hands before you touch her ear and after and keep her hands as clean as possible and away from that area. The cleaner you can keep the area the better.
Good luck and don't be scared, it sounds like you are doing everything right!
