Sitting in the Hospital After Breaking My Humerus Bone at the Elbow...

Hi All,

Just a vent.

I have never broke anything in my body before and I am 33 years old...I can no longer say this.
This weekend my hubby is turning 40 years old and we planned a weekend getaway at a local Posh Hotel in town. We were relaxing and having some nice, quiet, kid-free time when I fell off the bed and broke myself!

This is so crappy! Not only was hubby's time ruined but I am in A LOT of pain!

Thanks for taking the time to read...I am having a pity party for myself right now. Hubby is sleeping on a cot next to me and I have been waiting for the surgeon who worked on me this morning to come explain all he did and talk to me about my recovery and I heard something about having to go back in eventually so he can remove the hardware he placed...something about some screws and a plate? Ugh! Ick!

This sucks!

~ Anyone have experience with this type injury and taking care of the kids? Starting to panic a bit...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I got released from the hospital earlier today, it's now 2am and I am awake due to pain...I am trying to stay on top of the pain medication but I am having trouble, it seems like no matter how many pills I take I am still in serious pain! Trying to keep it iced and stationary. The surgeon said he will show me the x-rays when I go in on Wednesday for my follow-up but the gist of it is I have 2 plates, some screws and some wires holding everything in place...and I guess eventually all that hardware will have to be removed, yay, she said sarcastically!

I think that I will feel better as soon as I can get more than 2 hours of sleep at a time...

Thanks for the allowed vent, I needed it!

May I join your pity party? It is 3:00 a.m. and I am sitting in my office chair with a heat pack waiting for my pain meds to kick in (triple spell checking). Everyone else is sleeping. I had a procedure done on my back 2 weeks ago and I think at this point there is something wrong.

I had ankle surgery when my daughter was 18 months old. I was on crutches. My husband works long hours, so I was on my own with her. I made her wear the leash and at times had to pull back the reigns to get her back. It was hard, but we made it.

You poor thing. All I can do is hope you were doing something fun with your husband when this happened. You did say it was the bed you fell off, right? ; )

omg, this sucks for you!
My mom broke her humorous when she was in her 50's, it was sore for a time but healed fine.
AND.... this is what happens when you try to escape, lol.
Fell of the bed, eh? interesting :)

Hang in there!!!! I broke my leg twice as a kid, but I had someone, ie my mom, there to wait on me hand and foot! I think I would go crazy if I broke something now!! I am really sorry that happened to you. I wish you the best and a super speedy recovery. Take care!!

I broke that bone, and sounds like in the SAME place... except I was in kindergarten. I couldn't put my arm in a brace once the cast was on, I had to hold it straight out (like I was getting ready arm wrestle)... IT SUCKS SO BAD!! I completely feel your pain :( How did you manage breaking it? Send me a message if you need to vent more, I've been there... I've broken more bones than all the rest of my family members COMBINED. Just make sure your kiddos know that mom needs their help, and it's their turn to take care of YOU! Feel better honey, I hope you get some good drugs ;) MIGHT I ADD that I broke my foot in 6 places when my daughters were 2 and 3, the 2 year old still in diapers. I couldn't walk. BUT... I managed. You're mobile, so you've got a one up on me :)

I don't have any advice but I just wanted to say "yeouch!" and "I'm so sorry this happened!"

Hang in there and I hope it heals quickly and nicely for you.

Been there done that. But bless your heart, it sounds like yours was worse than mine!

I actually broke the head of my radius (next to the humerus) at the elbow 16 years ago. The docs wouldn't cast it because they said it would be lots of physical therapy afterwards, because they would have to cast it at a 90 degree. BUT if I injured it again, it would be surgery. At the time I had a 3 month old and a 4 year old boy!

My husband was a trooper and even washed my hair for me. My mom was close and would come over after work to help. My mother in law felt bad because she was out of town otherwise she would have helped.

It will be tough, but you need to ask for help and accept offers of help! You didn't say how old your kids were. Obviously my baby didn't understand, but the 4 year old was old enough to understand and help too.

Good Luck.
