Should My 4 Month Old Be Sleeping Through the Night Now?

I was just wondering if my 4 month old is supposed to be sleeping through the night now? Her sleeping pattern is kind of off and on right now. Sometimes she'll sleep through the night and sometimes she won't. She has reflux so I think she is going to be one of those babies that wakes up no matter what for a little longer than most. I was just curious on average when babies start sleeping through the night.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the feedback! I feed her formula but I know a lot of reflux babies like to eat more often (kind of like breastfed babies) because they spit a lot of it up and it soothes their stomach. She actually sleeps pretty well on her side. She takes 3 or 4 hour naps at daycare so I know she's capable of sleeping. It sounds like she's pretty much the norm based on the comments. Thanks, again!

there is no real "average" unfortunately. generally they say about half of babies start sleeping through the night sometime around 6 months old. Personally, my daughter did not sleep the night through until she was 9 months old, my son is a little over 2 and STILL does not sleep the night through.

Every baby is different. My son slept through the night by 6 months and my daughter is 10 months and is still up at least 1 time a night. Sometimes 2 or 3. I dont forsee her sleeping through the night anytime soon. The first year a babys sleep patters can change a lot. Good luck!!

Every baby is different. My son didn't sleep through the night until he was 18 months and then it was sporadic. He finally started to sleep through the night around 22 months.

there is no "supposed to" for this. if you have a 4 month old that sometimes sleeps through, i think you are super lucky! if everything else is fine and she is healthy and all that good stuff, just be thankful. and it could change one way or the other, probably will. congrats, btw :)

Ha!

My DS was by 4mos. 12hrs straight through every night. It was awesome.

My 5.5month old? Different story. Most nights she's still up 2x to eat. Not to mention the wakings to play.
We're beginning CIO next week because I'm just done with this over night business. She doesn't need to eat overnight at all.

So every kid is different!

Every baby is different. Some do right away, some take 2 years. Of my three one didn't sleep through the night until 2 - one slept through at 6 weeks (but regressed as a toddler) and the other at about 8 mos. They are all different, and often need us in the middle of the night. Just try to find out what wakes her and address it as best you can. Good luck.

My oldest started sleeping through the night at 3 months, my youngest was 1 before he slept all night and it wasn't even b/c he was hungry. Just didn't sleep.

My 4 month tends to wake up hungry 4 1/2 hrs after going to bed--and she doesn't have reflux... She catnaps in the evening but doesn't fall solidly asleep until 11:30/midnight, then wakes up hungry around 4am. Sometimes she'll sleep 7 or 8 hours, but these days she's been teething and her sleep schedule is impacted.

She should start sleeping longer by the time she's 6 months and on rice cereal.

There are a lot of factors. It could be that if she's nursing she's processing the milk faster than formula (totally normal) and hungry. Consider a dream feed (where she's asleep but you nurse her before you go to bed). It could also be that her reflux is bothering her, so see what sleeping arrangements or medication might help. Remember, too, that sleeping "through the night" is really more like 5 hours than 8 at first.

My toddler still sometimes wakes. She's getting her 2 yr molars, so I can't blame her for being grumpy.

It's variable. DS slept through the night at 16-1/2 weeks. My sister's kids did at 6-7 weeks.

My kiddos did not sleep through the night until older, one had reflux and one did not. I wanted to share that my sister's baby had reflux and Dr. Chalmers helped her naturally with it but adding a small amount of Quantum Premiere Pink Salt to her bottles.....literally her reflux is gone---so simple and it truly helped her. I wish I had known this when my almost 5 year old was a baby.

Do you breastfeed or bottle feed? I think with breastfed babies this is pretty normal. Both my kids were sleeping through the night before or at 4 months, but I also knew how much they were eating, etc. I think the feeding technique makes a difference, but I'm not sure, I didn't breastfeed so I may be wrong.

Also do you have her crib mattress tilted? That will help with the reflux. You can either hook one end higher than the other or just shove a towel or blanket under one end of the mattress so she's at an angle.

If you want the advice I got from my pediatrician to make it happen let me know! It might work both ways, but I know breastmilk gets digested quicker and they might wake up earlier b/c of it! Hang in there! The first 6 months are the hardest!

Mine started sleeping 10-12 hours between 4 - 5 months. We used the Babywise sleep training method and have been very happy with it. At six months now, she'll occasionally wake up some time between 4 and 6 am, but she'll usually just talk to herself for a little while and then fall back asleep. If we go check on her and she sees us, then it's wake up time!

All babies are different. Some do, some don't. My son is almost 4 and doesn't, but he is also potty-training and night time is tough. If it wasn't one thing, it would be another (LOL). I have a friend who has 4 kids and each one had different sleep styles, from through the night as a baby to one of them who didn't sleep through till he was older than 4. You never know!
