Service Organizations

My MIL recently went on a weekend trip with women she has been friends with for 30 years. She became friends with them through a service organization they all were a part of. They all had children around the same age and have become life long companions and support systems. I would love to find something like that. Other than moms' groups (which don't really work for me as I work outside the home) and church groups (not my scene) is there anything out there for 30 something year old women? I really like the service component too. Anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Yes, go join Junior League! There are women of all ages and from all walks of life there - the common theme is service to women and children. There are all kinds of volunteer opportunities at Junior League, ranging from kids' health to political activism (related to women's and children's issues) to soup kitchen type events. You'll find a lot of working moms, stay-at-home moms, young professionals, and even retirees there. It's a great organization that I'd wholeheartedly recommend to any woman looking to volunteer in her community while making friends with other like-minded women.

Think about the causes/organizations/charities that are closest and dearest to your heart and go from there.

Try meetup.com - there might be a group that supports something or a cause that you care about.

If not - then write down WHAT causes you like support - then start connecting with them - meeting the people...you might be able to organize an event as well...

If it's your kids - then you might try your local/school PTA - there you will find some people who have the same views as you. Or even your church - they might be sponsoring and you can help out and you can join up there!

Hope this helps!

Junior League, definitely.

Junior League is a good one around there and they help a lot of people.

My husband is in the Masonic Lodge and I work with them on volunteering events to help children, raise money and volunteer with community events.

Although my daughter graduated high school in June, I am still involved in the PTA at her Sr High School as well as Elementary school level.

Good luck.

If you're single you should look up http://www.parentswithoutpartners.org/

It's a good organization and my friends that have been in it have done all sorts of activities and things in the community. If there's not a group in your area then perhaps you can start one.

Do you have a daughter? I have made several good friends through Girl Scouts (fellow leaders and volunteers) and MANY of them work full time. I've also made some friends through my book club, exercise classes and by volunteering on school committees, lots of working moms in those groups too.
