We are moving to Westerville in a few weeks and desperatly need some info about area preschools. I have 4 year old boy who is currently enrolled in a community ed based preschool here in Michigan and we absolutely love his teachers!! My two older children (6 & 8) had her as well and were hoping to send our 2 year old to her as well when the time came. I am looking for a preschool that fosters independent play, strong parent influence, acedemics as well as learn play. I would really love a totally hands-on teacher, someone who gets down on the floor with the kids and encourages their individualism.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses!!! I have talked with his current preschool teachers and told them about some of the options that you all mentioned. I made my own phone calls and requested info on Central College and the preschool at Johnnycake Corners. I think I am going to wait a week and once we get settled, myseld and my preschooler will visit the schools and go from there.

Well you're in luck. There are a lot of quality programs in the area. A good place to start is www.naeyc.org. (National Association for the Education of young children) They are the accrediation agency for preshools and the shools that take the time to seek out their accrediation are those that are willing to meet a set of standards. Also ohio has a "Step up to Quality" rating for preshools. And shools will be rated as Step One, Step Two, and Step Thee, the standards needed to obtain these ratings can be found at http://jfs.ohio.gov/cdc/docs/Tiers.pdf. There are a lot of "Church" and "Community" offerings in the area and alot of good ones that are offered AT a church but not neccisarily run By the church.

This isn't in westerville, however it is a very good school. It's Gahanna Christian Acadamy, it goes from preschool to 12th grade. I have 3 grandchildren who go there, and they just love it.The teachers are very good with the children and they just love her.

M.,
I hope you love Westerville as much as we do. I have lived here my entire life and it is very hard to leave. I send my daughter (she is 3) to Enchanted care for her preschool. We have several family members that also have taken there children there. The preschool teachers are great especially Miss Katie. She really loves the kids and the same goes for how the kids feel about her. They use the Nobel learning system which is great because every month you are given a "progress report" on how your child is doing and a look ahead for the upcoming month. Even though we will be sending our daughter to Gahanna Christian Academy this next year I would recommend Enchanted Care on County Line Road to anyone. They have really been great for my daughter. They encourage free play but they also have structered learning throughout the day. She has learned to write all of her letters and numbers in just 6 months. They really do work very hard with the children. Good Luck!!

Hi M.!
Welcome to Westerville!

We moved here a little over a year ago and love the area. My 3yo son is enrolled in a 2 morning a week preschool at Central College and we are very happy there. We have no point of comparison (since he's our oldest) but there is a lot of communication from the teachers (at least once a week) and plenty of opportunitites to participate in school (in the classroom or with other initiatives).

When I looked around last year, I also visited Our Day in downtown Westerville and All the Children on Freeman Road. I ultimately chose Central College because they have a long history, the classrooms they use for preschool are intended for this purpose and they were closest to our home.

There is a preschool fair coming up at the Westerville Community Center (which is a great facility if you haven't checked it out yet- http://www.westerville.org/Default.aspx?tabid=111) and that may help you decide if you can wait. Were you hoping to enroll your son ASAP? I assume so since he's 4. I surfed for a link about the fair but only found this info from an e-mail I sent to some friends: Friday January 9 from 9:30- 12:30. I'm afraid that's likely before you move here.

There was a preschool fair at Grace Brethren Church last January. Let me see if I can find out it there's another one this year.... Well no luck on a Google search so I wonder if that fair has moved to the community center and that's why it isn't on the internet anywhere. Sorry this isn't much help...

Your realtor should be able to give you a website or phone number of an agency that helps pair up families with preschools. They were at the fair I went to last year and I can't for the life of me remember their name but it seems like something a realtor should have access to for relocation purposes.

There are great family resources in Westerville which is why we moved here. If you have any questions or want input on anything (even kid-friendly restaurants or a good pizza place) feel free to contact me!
